Short review: If you like boss rush type games but don't want the RPG elements of things like Elden Ring then this game is right for you. If you've played Monster Hunter games before, this is just more of what you love and is a great addition to the series and franchise.

Long Review: Monster Hunter Wilds is unlike any game I've played before, even other Monster Hunter games. The game is streamlined for the betterment of your hunts. You can get from monster to monster faster than ever. Even with the larger maps, which are frankly absurdly huge, you wont be spending tons of time waiting and loading and wasting time between hunts. You can get right to the point, right to the monsters, and the hunting feels amazing as well. Weapons all feel fast, fluid, and amazing. While I mainly run the amazing Sword and Shield, from what I've played of the other weapons they all have taken what made their weapons amazing originally and dialed it up to eleven. With the new wound mechanics, you can feel the punch of your weapons as you get right in the monsters face.

Exploring is just as fun in this game. From general mining and gathering all the way to carrying eggs from the highest nest back to base, the movement and feel of the game makes even the mundane feel quick and snappy to where you don't feel like you're wasting time going to and fro getting the items you need to make your hunts even better. Between all the quality of life improvements and the general upkeep of the game, while you'll have to spend time gathering and farming, you for sure wont even feel like it is time wasted by doing so here.

Combat is also super fluid and nice. As mentioned above, all the weapons feel more snappy and you can feel the punch that they all pack. You really do feel like your own force of nature with your amazing hunters strength that is being put up against these colossal monsters. The Sword and Shield is my weapon of choice, and while the main flow of combat for me still follows the setup in World and Rise with the Perfect Rush, the rest of the combos placed in between and the additional tech all feels fantastic. The SnS has the ability to latch onto the monsters, not to dissimilar to the clutch claw in Iceborn, but instead of a mechanic you must do to do as much damage as possible, it is just another move you can work into your normal kit to either do a stunning smash with the shield, or tear through all wounds in the area with the slash of your sword. Other weapons have similar ways to play with the wound mechanic, and all of them feel amazing when added to the rest of the kit your weapon has. I cant speak for all weapons, but I can say as a member of the Sword and Shield crew, playing my weapon has never felt better than in Wilds.

I also just have to touch on the story for this game. While I know a lot of people just skip through things to get from one monster to the next, I really must say, take your time watching and participating in the story. Especially if you are a longtime fan of Monster Hunter and its lore, getting to see things that have been left to the expanded lore of the game for so long now fully brought into the fold is stunning. While not the EDW of old, the final boss of the low rank story is a terrifying monster that is well worth the fight and buildup that it is given. If you follow along the whole way and don't skip through, the payoff will be spectacular for you. And all that isn't even mentioning the high rank story where we get to see the culmination of the last few games come to an end, with threads brought in from World, 4G, and so much more, this game really feels like a game that cares a lot about its extended history and treating its fans with the respect that comes with that. The game never talks down to you, not in a way that feels like hand holding. It tells you all you need to know and allows you as the player to experience things and feel like you truly have a hand to play. And in the end, by your own order will you save all of the Eastlands from the looming threats.

And to wrap it all up, you have the achievements for this game. From taking down tempered monsters, to finding and hunting the largest and smallest versions of every monster, the path to finish all the achievements is made super streamlined even without the use of mods. In the past there have been some achievements that have required a lot of busywork and tedium that have put people off from getting them, but with this game with additions like the binocular system to check a monsters crown status, to the fishing mechanic being fully flushed out when hunting a whopper, or just the general taking down monsters, you will never feel like your time is being wasted, well, mostly. Getting some of the final small crown (Uth Duna) can be a bit tricky, and I can easily say that around 3-4 hours of my playtime was just devoted to save resetting to run in, check the size, and reset again to find that final crown. But with the added function of the binoculars, I didn't have to sit and hunt the 100+ that I cycled through, so my time was still respected much more than it has in any other game in the series to date. So if 100% completing the game for achievements is your thing, you will still have a great time getting those last few.

All in all, Monster Hunter Wilds is an amazing game, an amazing sequel, and an amazing way to continue the history of the Monster Hunter franchise and ensure that everyone knows it is here to stay. Just for some long time fans, just remember, allowing new fans to join the series due to things being easier isn't a bad thing. Things being easy helps people digest things better and makes them more interested in the series as a whole. Sure some people might want health bars, or trackers, or a great many things, but let them enjoy the game how it is best for them to do so. Given time, they will come around to other mechanics, see how things are meant to feel, and if Monster Hunter is a right fit for them, they will explore the rest of the series and enjoy everything Monster Hunter has to offer, so please, don't bash the 'tourists' who are just experiencing the game for the first time. We all start somewhere, but its how we choose to continue onwards that determines if one is truly meant to be the hunter we all know we can be.

absolutely a 10/10 game, the best and most fun Monster Hunter to date in this Fifth Fleet hunters opinion (who has gone back and played the rest of the series). Buy it, Download it, and Enjoy it, because Monster Hunter Wilds is one amazing ride!

if you like tactical games, you'll like this. they call them Xcom likes for a reason, because Xcom is the gold standard. Even without mods this game is great, but of course, being able to play it as Star Wars themed is always a plus.

Really holds up if you have the restored content mod. Super fun, especially if you like the Old Republic.
