Early Access Review
Update 30: Still messed up. Same issues. They're focused on the Quest version now. Now I look stupid for wasting my money on this game that I wanted to see succeed.

Note: This review is specifically for update 29, the as-of-now recent update. Please note that I like the game, but this review is more geared towards the update.

Pavlov was a really, really fun time. No matter if it was just the vanilla maps or gamemodes or the custom gamemodes as well as just the maps, I had a lot of enjoyment from this game, including the additional new things being brought to the updates, like the once custom gamemodes now official. However, with the launch of Update 29, I was somewhat excited for the update. New engine, new improvements, and more. Now imagine my surprise once the update dropped.

Update 29 isn't just the worst update. It's not just a broken update. It's an update that effectively killed my interest in this game. Despite the long amount of beta time and fixes, this feels like it shouldn't have came out. At all. It's like the developers forgot to test this out, especially with the almost half-a-year beta testing, it should of been at least stable enough.

I'll just say what I liked about this update. I like the new guns, as they're new guns, the more the merrier. I think PSVR2 crossplay is kind of neat, as well as turning off said crossplay. It actually really helps if people want to just play with the normal VR players. I don't know how to feel about Mod.IO, but that's an entirely different situation.

So, that's all the good. The bad mostly comes from just trying to start the game up from the first place. I can tell you right now that I use a Vive Cosmos Elite as my VR headset. Me along with a bunch of people have been having issues with starting the game up. From it giving errors from the EAC screen, to it not even starting at all, forcing me to reset the headset and do it all over again. I thought it was a me problem, but others had this problem as well. I had to go through a guide to actually get the game started. It's absolutely ridiculous. I shouldn't be forced to do a bunch of stuff when going into a game, especially for an update for said game. Imagine if someone bought this when the update launched and was confused.

Even though I got into the game, the issues didn't stop there. Controller issues were a common occurrence.
  • Grip Toggle not working (when the update launched, has been fixed now)
  • Controller setup was broken for Vive wands for no reason. (Buy Menu on all buttons, couldn't unload Pistol mags)
  • Even changing bindings of a controller didn't work.

Not only that, but when I played the game, I feel like I was a kid coming out of a roller coaster, my gun constantly shaking and not letting me properly aim, especially for snipers.

The new engine also destroyed the frame rate too. My game ran just fine with the previous update, and with the update for Unreal 5.1 replacing the previous engine, I felt like I was attempting to play GTA IV on my old gaming laptop. The frame rate was abysmal, despite trying to lower the graphic settings. Again, others had this issue as well, so I'm not the only one.

Overall, this update just made me uninstall the game. I love the game and the effort that gets put into the game. However, this update made me stressed. I don't know how this came out at this state or even wonder why the update has not been kept in beta for longer. I never will know why. Vankrupt, I hope you can either iron out all of these issues or realize that the update is a bust and revert back U28 to further test U29 somehow. Most likely the former. For now, I'm just going to play something else.

Game is fine, DLC tactics are ♥♥♥♥♥♥. This isn't even a fighting game, it's an arena-brawler, and they still treat the DLC as that and act like each character is going to be a huge game changer, which it obviously isn't.

Really get this game on sale and mod it since the community is very active, going above and beyond for mods that have better quality and care compared to this (despite some modders wanting to have you pay for mods as well.)

Update 9/20/2024: Yeah this game is still stuck in DLC limbo.

This is probably one of my favorite Smash clones out of all of them for now. Not only is the game play, the crossovers, and content, but for the encouragement for workshop support. Modding is one of the main reasons why people even play SSB Brawl still, and for good reason. More content, unexpected characters to play as, and more variety.

Ever since workshop has released during beta and since the making of this review, 5000+ creations ranging from new characters, stages, and more have been released, slowly and surely improving as time progresses. Not only that, but workshop is very optimized for categorizing different characters per series or creator and how it loads them up to not overfill the game.

If you have the money, get it either full-priced or during a sale.

Honestly, while this game does have a bunch of bugs and feels incomplete, ( *Cough* Early Access *Cough* ) what was given to us is an endless assortment of fun, gun-slinging action.

A huge amount of guns, a couple of maps to get us started, workshop map and weapon support, and more. I'm not saying it is a PERFECT game as there's still a lot of bugs to deal with and more content to be added before leaving Early Access, but as it slowly keeps updating, it will pretty much be really great.

$14.99 is a fine price for this kind of game, but wait until it goes on sale to pay for it a little lower.

While the rest of the DLC is great (Cruise Ship, Co-Op, and the great amount of fixes and bugs and additional features.), the review falls flat towards the "Death Wish" mode, which is pretty much the other half of the DLC.

Pretty much, this is a Speedrunner's DLC. And it's meant to be that way. Casual players will either go for not playing it or using the EZ mode. The tasks at hand for the normal mode is way too hard for people who want an enjoyable time and wanting to unlock the extra content, considering that it was showcased a lot for the trailer. I know EZ mode is there, but it's locked behind a paywall with the Pons. It's not much, but if you're someone who is constantly trying to do everything on EZ mode, good luck spending all the Pons you have, only for you to grind more or try to get them through Console Command means.

The main theme of this review is, Peace and Tranquility (the name of EZ mode) should of have been a difficulty. Not a way to make the game easier.

Seeing that it's used to make people spend pons just straight up annoying for the casual player. And also seeing that this is Gears for Breakfast's FIRST DLC, it just disappoints me. I hope they reconsider the difficulty aspect and make it like that. For now, you'd probably have to wait until they make it not keyboard-breakingly annoying and stressful.
