Bought this game to play on my Steam Deck because it looked relaxing and fun. I was not expecting the level of depth and polish this game brings. Multiple types of balls, multiple ways to combine them and their effects.
There are several characters that completely alter how balls move on the screen. There's even a character that makes each ball launch turn based. Don't like that? Well you can pair it up with a character that automates the entire run.

Enjoyment to cost ratio is nearly off the charts. Definitely recommend this game.

Edit as of 2025-09-18:

I can't recommend buying this game as of 1.0 patch.

The review is getting stronger.

Bugs now have an attack range further than is visible.

The review is getting stronger.

Difficulty increases faster than your dwarf can move and faster than your drill can be fueled. This as all added so we can bolt on a loot simulator? Yikes.

The review is getting stronger.

One of the biggest issues that still isn't solved in 1.0 release is the core mechanic of strengthening the bugs.
Kill the bugs? The mission timeline will shorten for each bug killed AND add more bugs.
Avoid the bugs? After an already excessively short time period, every bug from now until the end of your run will get more HP and do more DMG. Oh, and more will spawn. Oh, and we'll add more projectiles.

I've never played a game that includes so many guns and penalises people for using them as much as this one.

I never expected to have this much fun. I can see why this game gave birth to a whole new subgenre of games.

All you need to do is move around, select your upgrades, and enjoy.

Early Access Review
Despite being Early Access, this game is a LOT of fun if you like exploring, building, crafting, vikings, or combat.

This game is all kinds of fun and $13. If you're thinking about it, just pull the trigger.

TLDR: I do not recommend this game.
The story is enjoyable, but the game design, technical flaws and constant time wasting reduce this game from enjoyable to vexing.

I tried to figure out exactly why this game rubs me the wrong way.
To put it simply, this game can not stop taking your ability to choose or freedom away from you.
You have freedom to enjoy area maps, but your character is unable to walk over knee high rocks.
You're free to fight, but that's almost only wild animals.
You're free to do quests, but if you do them in the wrong order you're punished.
Your companions can not seem to decide whether they should add input or not. Sometimes they are insightful and others they completely ignore wildly important information. I hope you enjoy running around in this environment because you're going to be doing a lot of it. Of the 24hrs I spent on the main quest, I'd estimate 16-ish hours were spent running around. Running for fetch quests. Running because one of your companions couldn't be bothered to tell you everything we'd need BEFORE going across the map. Running to explore. Running around mobs. Running, running, running.
On top of this you have a combat system that is frustrating and unsatisfying. Your dodges are almost worthless. You need to time every dodge/block because the distance created is almost non-existent. With enhanced dodge, it's difficult to control WHERE you are dodging as the game decides where you're going. Not you. The AI is not much better than interactive training targets that are invulnerable during their attacks.

With that being said, the game looks fantastic. The story is intriguing, if a bit predictable. I enjoyed the world building and dealing with the various factions. I wish this game had more polish. This game could really use an enhanced edition much like The Witcher 1 had. And for the love of En on mil frichtimen, add fast travel from everywhere. Not just arbitrary points on the map!

Another enjoyable RPG from Bioware before they were consumed by the Dark Lord Profitus at EA.

My Time At Portia is an amusing game that blends life sim, some combat, and 3D. It's still in early access so expect somethings missing and bugs. That being said, don't let that keep you from trying this game.
