NieR: Automata: The Perfect Balance

I'll start this off by saying: I usually never write reviews on anything, since I really just don't find it very worthwhile. But, after the amazing journey I've experienced with NieR: Automata, I thought it was more than appropriate for me to share a piece of my mind about this masterpiece. I'll try to avoid spoilers as much as I possibly can.

Now: What did I like about it?
Well, long story short, nearly everything!

The Good:

The environment, atmosphere, and the story of this game are something I've never experienced in a game before. It was an experience like no other. The story and the characters had me captivated for hours on end, hell, I even spent a good ten hours on this game on one of my days off (which is something I'd usually never do). As someone who gets bored of things fairly quickly, for me completing a game is already a miracle in itself.

I was very positively surprised by the story, and how much content the game had to offer. The story was nearly not as short as I first thought it would be, which was a huge plus. The characters all fit well into the world of the game/story, and they all have their own purpose in it, which is great for immersion. 2B, 9S, and 2A are the perfect trio, and they all have very different, yet fitting personalities. Their personalities also constantly evolve at the perfect rate, which is also another thing I really liked about the writing. Play this game, and you'll know what I mean.

Now, let's talk about the graphics. This game is beautiful. It usually looks more like a painting than a video game, if that makes sense. Might be a bit of a stretch, but that's how I see it. The graphics weren't perfect though, but more about that later on.

Next up, let's talk sound: The music was almost a half of what made NieR: Automata so great for me. As someone who composes music almost on a daily basis, the soundtrack, and sound design of a game are already game changers for me. In NieR: Automata, the sound creates such an atmosphere that it almost feels surreal at times. Every main location of the game has it's own soundtrack, which evolves around the decisions you make in the game, and that's just great to hear. It really helped me understand the story, and the characters better.

The voice acting could've been a bit better at times, but that's understandable, it gets the job done well. Other than that, the SFX, etc. is pretty good. Worth listening to while you play the game!

Next up, the mechanics of the game: This is from my perspective a "Hack-And-Slash" game, and a great one at that. The movement, and combat mechanics all feel polished, and fluid, but the controls in certain parts of the game were a bit confusing to me at first. As a M/KB player, I really recommend you use a controller for this game though, or use a mod, but I'll talk some more about that later on. Long story short, the controls feel great for the most part!

The Bad:

Well, there isn't much to say, and to many people the things I'm about to list below probably aren't even issues.

1st off, the FPS cap. I understand, that the engine is designed to run at a maximum of 60 fps, since removing the cap CAN cause some issues with physics etc. But monitors with higher than the normal 60hz refresh rate were already available for consumers back in 2016, when this game was released. I had to download the FAR mod to remove the cap. I had seen multiple posts about why you shouldn't do that, since it had caused issues in the game, but I never experienced any issues. The game ran perfectly at 240hz, although I have a mid-tier PC.

2nd, some of the graphics. The graphics in this game for the most part are beautiful, as I mentioned earlier. But, some of them look like they've been ripped out of a N64 game. It didn't actually bother me that much, but if you want the best experience possible, I'd suggest you download the HD Texture Pack with the FAR mod. With the HD Texture Pack, the game looks flawless.

3rd, and last, some of the controls. As I said earlier, the controls in this game are near-perfect. The keyboard inputs feel fluid, and responsive, but there were some things I would improve on. The camera movement with a mouse in this game felt really clunky at times, and also the Hacking controls felt really out of place sometimes. I also fixed this by downloading another mod though (NAIOM), so if you're planning on playing with M/KB, look into that as well.

Please, please, please note that these are just the things I've personally experienced, these might not bother anyone else AT ALL, and should not be a deal breaker, especially if you're willing to jump through a hoop or two to install a few mods (VERY easy to do).

Now, The Ugly:

Lol, nothing really.

TLDR; Game's a masterpiece, even just slightly better with mods.

Vanilla: 9.5/10
Modded: 10/10

Probably the best game I've ever played. Looking forward to NieR: Replicant! :)

Thanks for reading, have a nice day! :)
