Back In March 2024, I Completed The Demo Version v0.05 In 4 Days & Enjoyed A Lot. I Am Not Usually Into Mad Max Style Weapon-Car Combat But This Is A Fun Game. Now After Seeing The Release Version,I Just Wish The Developer Gives Us An Option To Pick The UI From The Older Build Since I Am Not A Fan Of 3D UI's & Its Physics. Just Saying Because It Really Covers Much Of Screen. I Know Its A Minor Issue However I Wish Him The Best Since This Title Is Successful For A Spiritual Successor Of Vigilante 8 & Twisted Metal :)

Back in 2024 I played Heading Out, a roguelike racer RPG set in the 1970’s America that had given me an interest of driving games with resource management elements. Thanks to Keep Driving, developers YCJY Games has delivered something truly imaginable to experience the early 2000’s era in a pixelated art style & brings out the best road trip RPG in over a decade.

Its Finally Summer

Let’s get back to the basics, It's day one of your trip & you're either unemployed, student or a part time car mechanic. You create your character, squeeze all of the inventory items into your car's trunk & hit the road. There are 3 vehicles to choose from which resembles a 1981 Volvo 240, 1988 Toyota Hilux & 1970 Ford Mustang. The car choices determine how many passengers the player can pick up & items to store.

Where We Heading ?

The road trip begins with a letter by an old friend who lives all the way across the map has invited you to a music festival. Within three months you open the map to pick a route, and start driving. Like any road trip, there are resources to manage along the way, such as gas, food & money. When players encounter something on the road, they’re given a series of obstacle markers related to resources. Using the tags from the dashboard mirror, glove compartment, or the abilities given to the player by the passengers, the goal is to eliminate the obstacles with the corresponding tags before they do damage. There are obstacles that might require an extra hit due to armor, taking two tags to eliminate. Listening to the radio can add a musical note over one obstacle, so when it is eliminated, it takes out the two beside it. It's a simple combat system that's easy to understand within a few tries. It takes a lot of preparation to survive. Most skill cards have only a few uses before they need to be replenished by sleeping in a town, and glove box items have limited uses before you'll need to buy more at gas stations and convenience stores.

Hey You Need A Lift ?

As you cross the map, you'll encounter hitchhikers making their own way through the world. At first hitchhikers feel like they're just a tool to employ in your road events, since each brings a unique skill card to the dashboard, but as you travel together, they each slowly reveal more about themselves and their journeys through quick bits of text conversation. Drive with them long enough and they'll unlock new skills, and eventually reveal their own quest you can choose to pursue. There are total of 9 endings in Keep Driving besides just getting to that concert & hanging with your buddy. Yes, you can get arrested too. A summary of your trip gets scribbled into a notebook alongside a photo of the vehicle that took you everywhere.

Very Musically

As required for any road trip, the soundtrack is an absolute banger. Swedish indie bands like Westkust, Makthaverskan, Zimmer Grandioso, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Werewolf Asso,Aasma,Mundane,Holy Now,The Honeydrips & My Darling You are amazing. YCJY Games did nailed this part of the assignment. As the game goes on, players can purchase more CDs from the shops and even create playlists for the drive. The CD player can only queue six songs at a time, so you have to manually eject and choose another set of songs every time the music runs out. Each of it are a treat for the ears.

Verdict

Keep Driving is the sort of game I love getting back into & worth checking out. Pixelated art style, banger soundtrack, interesting characters, hidden areas to explore & a simple combat system that still rewards high skill. I have spend more hours than any racing game recently & that speaks volumes.

Early Access Impression

Since Grind Rush has catch my eyes recently due to the overall presentation. I am certainly waiting for the full game to release to give my full review. Bringing back a Motor-Storm Pacific Rift homage type of game has given me a fresh air. Good Luck AndGear & try to implement many ideas as you can :)

Shopping carts hasn’t always been a major usage in video games for decades. You see them as props in open world games or in grocery simulators. Developer Falling Saints decides to break the record in the matter of seconds with a bit of FlatOut ragdoll physics in Slackers Carts Of Glory & becoming something unique in the Time Trail sector.

Let No Man Thirst For Good Beer

You start playing either as Aaron,Travis,Gus & Sarah to decide who will buy beer for the gang before the store closes. The word Beer isn’t mentioned but its spelled as Boar, very cleaver. Upon selecting, you ride in your shopping cart & push fast as you can on the road avoiding any obstacles & ongoing traffic. You need to maintain your speed even if beer cans are there on the road to boost your stamina while you are going & jump, otherwise you will crash in a hilarious fashion. Remember carts don’t have brakes. This is possibly addictive but also challenging since each track is unlocked in every 3 beer cans which makes you mandatory to go for Gold or Platinum award.I wish they lowered the unlock numbers for us casual players, but I am happy that Falling Saints has opted for a more sanctioned, grassroots arcade feel here in Slackers Carts Of Glory. There’s 16 tracks in total but the level of authenticity to the environment here that really suits Slackers Carts Of Glory’s tone. There are shortcuts to help you cutting the chase but finding them & utilising it needs some practice.

Bit FlatOuttery

A bit interesting is the ragdoll physics applied here. It reminds me of FlatOut Or Trail Out Stunts mode in a way. From crashing into obstacles to smashing yourself into the store,it is very funny to see your character even get stuck in certain items like Mail Box or Bus Stand. If you have gore option on, you can see blood splattered all over the area within minutes. You can launch your character in mid-air whenever needed at high speeds. There is a possibility to wobble you character to make some funny dance moves too. You can also do some Daredevil stunts with your cart, kinda like Kick Buttowski. I think there is a possibility of some Mini-Games mode here, just hope developers add a slow-motion button as well as a photo mode.

On Victory, You Deserve Beer, In Defeat, You Need It

The AI deserves a special mention for giving as good as it takes, and they’re tough but ruined my runs occasionally which gave me a good laugh out of it. By the end of a race you get a receipt from the cashier showcasing your record while the sheer amount of mess left in the store is satisfying. Beyond the graphics, the sounds of the carts, obstacles and crashes are realistic. The sound of the race is often drowned out by its soundtrack from artist such as Hey Judy, Ditchbird & Max Hixon. The music choice is so good I have listened time to time on Spotify. While Falling Saints has been patient in rationing out its tracks throughout the career mode, the event types don’t get repetitive at once. There is Online multiplayer up to 4 players despite no Local Split Screen can stretch out the game’s lifespan, but I got more value from the Free DLC Updates it gets, & other quality of life enhancements.

Verdict

Slackers Carts Of Glory is the most unique take on, not just in the racing genre but also the Time Trail sector. Carefully detailed, excellent track design & an accessible handling model that still rewards high skill. I haven’t played anything related to shopping, but sometimes it’s nice to hop into the cart & get out to buy some beer for your buddies.

Back In 2011, Mayhem 3D released. A demolition derby racer with a comic art-style approach, which players didn’t appreciate much. Now in 2024, developers Serious Sim brings Heading Out with the similar art-direction & taking inspiration from the 1970s road movies giving a new taste in the driving scene like ever before & the adventure is astonishing.

I Drive Out

In Heading Out you play as Jackie, an Interstate Jackalope tagged by the media & everyone around you. Your mission is make your way across the country in order to chase down the world's greatest driver, your fear. There are several obstacles in your path of course, be it the police, car maintenance, managing money to refill the gas, eye focus & the stranger things type red cloud that spreads along the land & kills you. And once you finally catch up to this driver, the Interstate Jackalope has a mystery on their hands that they'll have to solve with each trip.

You Are A Good Kid Jackie

Heading Out has 4 Acts to complete which makes you feel you are playing Red Dead Redemption on wheels. With each Strangers & Freaks you encounter, the decisions you create increase or decrease the Fame & Reputation bar as you progress & does effect the dialogue on the radio. Radio is crucial part which you can’t ignore, you can skip it if you want to but most of the radio shows are very balanced to listen too. Either be a good guy or a bad guy, choice is yours.

I Need My Resource

Heading Out has a terrific resource management & provides a good challenge. You can progress at a steady 50 MPH avoiding the speed limit for each state, stopping only for the cop icon crossing by. You can also use gas to speed up, getting you to your destination quicker and putting more distance between you and the fear but would increase the wanted level for breaking the speed limit.

Fueled By Adrenaline

Heading Out is like more of road racer, thanks to its emphasis on dodging traffic and construction barriers. Races are short and sweet, matching the length of the song choice from the radio, and the tie to music. There are 4 vehicles in total which you unlock each act. Each has been meticulously detailed to look like their real life counterparts, while they’re not licensed gearheads are sure to recognise a classic Dodge Challenger, a Ferrari 250 & a Nissan 2000 GTR when they see them. They all sound as cool as they look too. There are plenty of premade events in Heading Out but, while Serious Sim has been patient in rationing out its routes throughout the career races, the event types do get a little repetitive. Replayability is on hand to stretch out the lifespan, but I expect I’ll get more value out of the Updates it gets. The lack of Co-op or Split-Screen is disappointing but hey, it’s a great single-player experience.

Verdict

Heading Out is a unique blend of genres with visual novel that makes it worth checking out. Comic book style, killer soundtrack, funny radio host & a ton of interesting stories to explore. I have played plenty of serious racers, but sometimes it’s nice to experience a fresh idea into the genre & immerse into it.

After a generation jam-packed with super robots that have made it their mission to teach us to fight & save the world, Battle RC arrives like a sharp but needed kick in the shins. Forget fighting etiquette; this is the wheeled equivalent of a bar brawl, and it’s absolutely outstanding. Assembled by Californian destruction combat specialists Blaster Games, Battle RC rekindles the weapon-slamming spirit from the original Robot Wars Series and brings it back to life inside the best demolition derby game in over a decade.

Its Machine Fighting Time

Don’t be deceived by Battle RC’s overt focus on wildly exaggerated, metal-rending mayhem. This isn’t a strictly box-’em-up carved from your average mobile game; it’s a true successor to the likes of the original Robot Wars and the criminally underrated BattleBots TV Series. There’s actually a serious arcade model beneath all of this over-the-top, elbows-out competition and conquering the bots here requires more than heavy right weapon – you need some genuine skill.

That’s A Knockout

Equally smashing, of course, is the actual smashing, whether you’re careening through arena side walls or mercilessly poleaxing your opposition. Battle RC’s wonderful soft-body dynamics mean the bots can be bruised, battered, and bent beyond recognition. The level of damage goes well clear of most other combat games; It seems just about every panel and part can be punished, pulverised, or simply prised off completely. Battle RC has a realistic damage level but I do enjoy the challenge of where just one mistake can see you limping in the arena missing a wheel. It’s compulsively addictive.Debris from collisions is persistent, too, and every new match lays down more evidence of the high-speed war playing out on arena. By the end of each arena it’s likely you’ll be wading through a carpet of metal shards & scattered tires. The sheer amount of mess left in the aftermath of match is wild, and yet almost never affects frame rate. The AI deserves a special mention as well for giving as good as it takes, and they’re tough but fallible foes. They ruined my chance to hit occasionally – but remember, that’s the point. Getting flipped over, shredded, and hammered is all part of the experience and forces us to fight defensively. Just remember : there’s no penalty for doing the same thing back to them, so have at it.

Let The RC Battle Begin

Despite my love for BattleBots, I’m happy Blaster Games has opted for a more grassroots arcade feel here in Battle RC. There’s a level of authenticity to arenas here that really suits Battle RC’s tone as a serious robot derby game at heart. There’s still plenty of wild stuff, though – like the classic BattleBots style arena, deadly lava, and a school yard that just basically skate parks for bots. That credibility extends to the robots, too, which are some of the coolest ones I’ve seen in a combat game. Each has been meticulously detailed and – while they’re not licensed – fans are sure to recognise a Tombstone, a Bite Force or a Gigabyte when they see them. They all sound as cool as they look, too. There is a Tournament event in Battle RC but, while Battle RC has been patient in rationing out its arenas, this event type do get a little repetitive. 1-4 player Split-Screen is on hand to stretch out that lifespan, but I expect I’ll get more value out of the Workshop. With the help of Tinkercad program, players are able to port their 3D modelled robots into the game to test. See if you can push 3 different Gigabytes into the hole!

The Verdict

Battle RC is the long-overdue return of serious, high-quality robot combat and, in that admittedly slim niche, it’s the king of the crop. Carefully detailed, remarkable photo capture, excellent arena design, enjoyable Split-Screen & an accessible handling model that still rewards high skill. I haven’t played any robot fighting games, but sometimes it’s nice to toss the rulebook into the fire and get out in the arena and trade some parts.

Back In The Childhood Years Of 2007-2012, I Played The Heck Out Of The Burnout 3 Takedown In My PlayStation 2. I Love The Racing,Destruction & Music.

Fast Forward To 2022 When "Trail Out" Released (Yes That Game Is Your "Current" Successor Not Wreckfest), Thats The First Time I Got To Know About The FlatOut Franchise Since Its Heavily Inspired Plus Bugbear Ain't Making Another FlatOut.

In 2023,I Checked What Type Of FlatOut To Buy But Unfortunately Some FlatOuts Has Games For Windows Live Feature Or Something Which I Am Aware It Used To Have During PC Physical Days.

Now Because Of This Major Update On 7th March 2024 Thanks To Zoom Platform, The Game Is Now Playable Without GFWL. I Enjoyed This Particular Version Of FlatOut To Be Honest.

Also Congrats For Breaking The Highest Steam Player Count After 11 Years Of Release.
