On a new game I save up for good armor and use javelins (X to swtich to melee mode). Use alot of ranged chars to start and flank with cavalry. There is a point when your cavalry can mow down the initial rush, then you can just set up archers on their respawn. And avoid vageirs and the desert people at the beginning. Horse archers destroy me early game.
