Listen, I'm all about restoring this game to its former glory by looking back at its past, and I thought this mod was gonna be it. However, what I ended up getting was a grifted version of TF2 with biased, cherry-picked features from the earlier years of the game. And honestly, I wouldn't even leave a negative review if that was just it.
What really pisses me off is that the creators of this mod branded it as something that "restores and carefully enhances the experience TF2 offered in its early years" and kept this kind of narrative as if they're trying to cater to TF2 veterans. This way, newer players not only will be fooled into thinking that this is what TF2 was like during its earlier years, but they will also be led to believe that this is what most of the people that complains today about the current state of TF2 (myself included) would like the game to return to be. It is not. This is not "just good old fashioned TF2" as they put it, this is someone else's vision of what direction TF2's development should have taken after its release. And that would be just fine, if it was branded as just that.

Don't let the haters fool you: this game is a gem. People who dislike this game usually blame it for either failing to be a carbon copy of Dark Souls 1 or just because of annoying shenanigans which are indeed annoying but don't really ruin the overall experience as much as they make out to do.
My piece of advice is to just play the game for what it wants to be and not for what it isn't, and you'll see all the marvel it has got to show beyond its the rough edges.
Treat the game's bosses as encounters amidst your journey, each with its own gimmick, and not as if they should all be epic showdowns of might and power, and you'll eventually start to appreciate each one of them.
Try not to question too much the delusional geography of the world, but always be curious about what comes next as if you're exploring a continent yourself, and enjoy all the different locations the game has to offer, each one with its own atmosphere.
Give a shot to the main story and NPC quests, as they mostly speak about different approaches to life and death and are not as empty as people try to make them out to be just because they don't always finish in a dramatic epilogue.
And lastly, I beg of you to experiment with everything the game gives you without being peer-pressured into playing with a standard "veteran-hardcore" playstyle just to brag about how good you're at the game online. This title is full to the brim of unique weapons, incantations and consumables, each with its own unique use or area of expertise, and basically anything (maybe with the exceptions of whips) is a viable choice, making it a shame to just stick to the usual ultragreatsword-only no-armor no-shield no-spells no-summons no-fun as all those wannabe pro push you into doing.
And remember: don't give up, Skeleton!
