Minecraft ist ein Open-World-Spiel (ursprünglich Indie-Open-World-Spiel), das vom schwedischen Programmierer Markus „Notch“ Persson erschaffen und von dessen Firma Mojang, welche im September 2014 für 2,5 Milliarden Dollar (etwa 1,9 Milliarden Euro) durch den Microsoft-Konzern aufgekauft wurde,[18] veröffentlicht wurde und bis heute weiterentwickelt wird. Das Spiel erschien erstmals am 17. Mai 2009 für PC, war damals jedoch noch in der Entwicklungsphase, welche die Alpha-, Beta- sowie noch andere Versionen umfasste.[19][20] Mojang veröffentlichte zusätzliche Versionen für iOS, Android und den Raspberry Pi.[7] Das Spiel wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit 4J Studios auf diverse Spielkonsolen portiert. Fast alle neueren Versionen von Minecraft erhalten regelmäßige Updates. Minecraft ist mit über 200 Millionen Exemplaren das meistverkaufte Videospiel weltweit auf allen verfügbaren Plattformen.[21]
