تنتشر ممارسة العادة السرية في الغالب لدى المراهقين والشباب، وكذلك لدى بعض الكبار. ويقدر أن 90% من الشباب الذكور في الولايات المتحدة و60-80% من الإناث قد مارسوا الاستمناء مرة أو أكثر خلال حياتهم.
