The black winged stilt is an unmistakable bird. Bold black and white body balanced on incredibly long red legs, with a long, fine black bill and beady red eyes.
Stilts can wade deeper than many other wading birds, and forage for prey with their extremely sensitive bill.
It was impressive to see these birds who appeared so vulnerable wading in the mud flats as individuals, join together in flight and move together as one formidable flashing black and white flock.
