I remember in my youth playing Battle Chess for hours on end, primarily just to see the variety of fights that ensued. I got Regicide in hopes of being able to teach my young son how to play chess in the same manner I learned so many years ago.
Regicide is sound in its mechanics and modes. While it's not a game I'd endeavor to climb leaderboards, the online component is there for those who enjoy it. It's also nice that the game is not simply chess with pretty graphics--the factions and modes add a hefty level of depth to the game, despite some balance issues that need addressing.
My biggest gripe with the game is that there is not a gore filter. I asked about it in one of the developer live streams prior to the game's release where the devs recognized the issue, but as it stands, you still cannot turn off the gore. You can turn off the execution/battle cutscenes, but even in the isometric view, you can see the bloody carnage taking place during the match. That alone puts this game on the digital shelf for me, as I cannot use Regicide to teach my kiddo how to play chess, and I have no desire to go online with it or play agianst AI endlessly. I realize my situation is unique, though, so I still recommend the game. Just be forewarned that if gore is an issue, you may want to read up on patch notes to see if a content filter has been added after this review.
