Stardew Valley is a sandbox video game, where the Player owns a farm. The payer can customize how their character looks upon starting the game and choose whether they would prefer a Cat or a Dog, which they will acquire after a few days on the farm.

They start out with an overgrown, run down farm in Pelican City and it is up to the Player to restore it back to what it once was. They can go into town, meet people and build relationships (even get married if they try hard enough) and buy supplies (such as, Seeds, Cooking Supplies, etc).

There is more to do than just farming, however, as there is also a mine at the top of the mountain. In there, the player can encounter monsters and rocks and ore. The ore the player finds within the mines can be used to upgrade their equipment, except for their sword which requires the player to buy or find a new, better one. To upgrade their tools, the Player must smelt some ore in a furnace and bring the ingots and the tool to the blacksmith in town. The Blacksmith will take the tool and ore and in a few days the Player must return to collect their tool again. During this time the Player cannot use the Blacksmith.

On the farm, the Player can do more than just plant and harvest crops. They can also look after animals if they get the local carpenter to build a Coop and/or Barn on the farm. Once that has happened, the player can purchase animals from their neighbour and begin to harvest produce (eggs, milk, wool, etc).

The more the Player plays the game, and the more the Player mines, farms, forages, etc, the skills the Player has will increase. This adds an RPG element to the game. When a skill reaches level 5 the player gets a choice of 2 feats to choose from. Once they have chosen, that choice will determine which feats they get to choose at level 10. These feats either make a skill easier or more profitable.

Overall, this game has a lot of variety to it which can keep a gamer occupied for quite a long time. It is much more than the game it is influenced by, Harvest Moon, with the addition of mining and skills and a few secrets. This game is a must-have for any fan of Harvest Moon or Rune Factory, and definitely worth checking out even if you haven't played any similar games.
