Act 1 Review:

9/10

Super fun game with well balanced progression if you have rpg experience and can figure out how to build your character with the scaling of the enemies. Jumping difficulty in this act is a little easier than Map 1 of Jump King and most of your classic big falls and huge punishments come from combat. It was extremely fun to learn the combat and get good at it, and I can still see a lot of room to grow even after speedrunning it a few times. A lot of it is getting used to tactical positioning and learning how to make the most out of your weapon. Do you need to parry to make openings? Do you need to focus on heavy attacks for stagger? Do you chain lights into special attacks or heavy attacks and how many light attacks should you use for different openings to optimise your dps? What attacks can be blocked and which ones do you jump over? All great stuff, just gotta get used to the dance of combat depending on the enemy you fight. Scout their moves, test their poise, see what you can get away with, and exploit their weaknesses. Honestly can't get enough of this game. It feels dramatically more fun than the first game and I can absolutely see myself 100%ing every act. The first game was a game entirely of nerves and consistency on many tight frame inputs far more than learned skill. All muscle memory and nerve control over decision making and game knowledge. This game feels like every mistake is deserved and a display of where I need to grow as a player. There's a few performance issues in multiplayer here and there, notably freezing, but it honestly ain't too bad. The huge double+ falls that people complain about is understandable, however absolutely avoidable with prep (such as always saving one heal if you know the drop isn't going to be safe if you're going to die to that boss, or not losing your cool and being ready to get yourself out of the bad position). And also, if you think this game is punishing or brain-rottingly cruel, though it is in this series' dna, nothing has come close to the first game... (Lost Frontier constant falls into 2-4+ minutes of autoscroll, BACK 2 THA' BOG, the house of nine lives) I don't mind every now and then being heavily punished from a boss death or fall because the game is so lenient normally. In the first game you can fall down like 60% of the entire map from several back-to-back extremely tight jumps you're likely to miss 3+ times each. Here you're falling to around a max of 1 min runback, unless you die again. A double fall adds like an extra 15-40 seconds. Not bad at all compared to the brainrot of the first game. Also, once you beat that boss they're dead forever. In the first game if you fall again you have to basically redo that "boss" all over again. In this game after beating a boss they're also much easier on subsequent refights (unless you fluked the fight) because half the battle is knowing your enemy. But that 2-4 frame jump is never getting easier. You just have to get more consistent. Point being, like all soulslikes, the more you play the better you get. Even Dark Souls dagger and parry only becomes easy once you learn all the bosses and have the practice. I love the jumping mechanics introduced in Jump King and finally being able to use them in a game where I have actual skill expression is awesome. This kind of game is not for everyone, but if you love multiplayer, precision platforming, and soulslike games, this game is peak. Highly highly recommend.

Love what you're doing devs, super excited to see where we go from here!

Played for hundreds of hours on the Chinese version of the game, heavily recommend :)

If it feels just alright at first, play more Demolition and eventually Ranked. Like most competitive games it takes some time to learn but trust, once you hit Diamond and above the game gets really strategically interesting. The time to kill is long at first but as you get better with the characters and their weapons it lowers drastically. Otherwise fun game with really high skill ceiling, give it a try!

Heavily recommend if you enjoyed the base game but be aware...

This DLC is HARD. VERY HARD. I heavily advise against seriously playing it until you've reached Solemn Tempest and collected all items (bonus if you manage to beat all peaks leading to ST without ropes). The new mechanics have a learning curve to them so USE ROPES during the hard sections to let yourself fail and get used to them. Unlike the base game the routes have a lot more emphasis on technical ability than just confidence. The nerves are only half the battle here. Use chalk fairly often (mainly for crimps to give yourself time to read the route) and use coffee for some particularly long leaps. Expect to have to do the same peaks several times to beat holds and rope records as well. The routes are pretty hellishly long as well now so best of luck on the endurance (no more sub minute or even really sub 5 minute routes).

The changes really are a massive improvement and the maps here I can tell will be more fun to replay than most of the base game maps. Push through the challenge, get good, and you'll have a great time! I almost quit after the first 4 hours because I was so intimidated and struggled so much! However after I let loose and actually got patient enough to really learn the mechanics and slow down on the climbs I've improved dramatically and can see how I'm supposed to play. Take it slow at first and relearn how to play fast. Good luck on the climbs!

Also join the Discord, sometimes having people to talk to while struggling helps a lot!
