Early Access Review
Needs a lot of updates before it's playable. Audio can straight up destroy your ears and sometimes the sliders don't work while you're playing/spectating, so hope whoever you're spectating is quiet. Also incredibly laggy - I have an okay pc and had to play on the lowest settings, but still would get incredible lag spikes and sometimes a full minute of <30 fps. The gameplay is alright, but sometimes you just die and you're not sure why.

The beginning area sucks, so starting over sucks. When you finally go beyond it, you can die from the random things. There is no consistency in good upgrades, so sometimes you're just screwed. This game is fun on the RARE occasion you get a good wand / upgrades. If anyone says, "well you should play with mods" Be warned, achievements are disabled (obviously) when you have them enabled.

Your character is obnoxiously slow so it's difficult to dodge and traverse the environment in a reasonable time. Starting equipment sucks, which is very irritating. Runs can last for up to an hour, so it feels like a gut-punch when you die to something stupid. Constantly have to make decisions to go get better gear and most likely die or go to the next area unprepared.

not friendly for people who casually liked portal 1 and portal 2. Some puzzles were fine and others made sense, others are awful and tedious. One of the test chambers had really bad textures on the surface so I didn't even know I could portal there, which wasted around 30 minutes of my life until I got desperate and spammed portals. I got up until the last chamber to which I more or less gave up and looked up the answer. Last chamber is really irritating to the point where the devs cheated (had the cube snap into place). The devs cheat with some mechanics, namely with the future cube's location. I at one point said to myself "Okay if the past cube moving, the future cube won't exist until it settles down." This is not the case for some chambers, and I have no doubt the devs had to write special code for those chambers.

Special audio/music triggers weirdly throughout the chambers. Some chambers are cheesable? I don't know if the solution I got was intended, except for one chamber where it told me I wasn't supposed to solve it that way.

Final chamber I spent the least time on because I knew if there was any chamber to have a convoluted solution, it would be that one. If are to cheat on any of them, cheat on that one, because I'm glad I did not spend time pulling hair out over it.

I'm giving this a thumbs up ultimately because it's free, the idea is really cool, and some of the chambers were really fun to solve. If you have only played through portal 1 and 2 and haven't experienced the brain melt of workshop maps, then I do not recommend this.

This game is the best of the series for many reasons, but it also contains issues that hinder enjoyment and immersion in the series. TLDR at the end.

The We Were Here series was never a technically impressive series of games but this game was a vast improvement over the previous entries. However, my friend and I have experienced a few technical issues with the game. Between hitching, player collision with environment, and a soft lock, it was not an environment I wanted to explore, as frame rates would decrease greatly depending where I went.

It is worth noting that my pc is on the lower-end and while it is entirely playable, I would expect a game with a simpler graphics style to perform better, especially with how many loading screens the game puts you through. (With lowest settings, I averaged 60 frames, dropping to 30-40 in some areas.)

The story is more or less easy to follow, the animations and voice acting giving much life to the player characters and the Jester. However, as this is a co-op game, it is hard to follow what is going on with the story as you banter with your friend, sometimes overlooking what the story may be trying to say.

The puzzles are the best in the series, avoiding many of the pitfalls of the previous games (particularly the decreased usage of "symbol-to-symbol-to-action" style puzzles), instead focusing on a mixture of physical movement and brain teaser style puzzles. However, with this experimentation, we found that some puzzles were much better than others. Notably, there is a part of the game where you must relay sound to your teammate, and he must be able to interpret that and give you something in return. While unique, it was so difficult to relay that it resulted in me just putting my headphones against my microphone for him to actually hear the sounds. I could not imagine this experience with someone who was deaf or hard of hearing.

Game design was overall good with some odd decisions. In a part of the game where you are given the ability to choose the next area, you are told to bring back several objects back to an area to progress the plot. However, to bring these objects back required both people, one of which was slowed down by carrying the object. It was then followed (several times) by a 50 second sequence of waiting, putting the item where it belonged, and then going back , waiting another 50 seconds, which finally ended with starting the next area. At certain points we just wished to get to the next area and move on.

There were also several points where we were just sitting in a cut scene of sorts for minutes at a time. The worst instance was a 3 minutes wait where there was no music, no dialogue, or anything intractable. They were infrequent but noticeable.

There was, however, a remarkable puzzle that really brought out the best in the team's capabilities. I won't spoil it, but you will know it when you get there. There were quite a few enjoyable puzzles that, while frustrating at first, had good payoff as we slowly solved it.

TLDR: Great game. Playable, but poor performance on lower-end machines. Story is good, but nothing revolutionary. Puzzles and interaction with friend alone make this game worth it. Occasional, odd game design that you will sometimes just have to ignore.

7.5/10

8/10 if technical issues weren't so prevalent.

the puzzles become easier and easier the longer you play it. It wasn't til like 2 of the many final puzzles that I began to struggle and even then the answer for one of them was botched where I had to do something I didn't know I could do. The philosophical part of the game was good until I forgot my previous answers between sections and was subsequently punished. It is akin to a collectathon where you can collect a lot of goodies but the payoff for getting everything is just not worthwhile. The story is interesting and purposely vague, but sometimes reading the random (almost like clips from a newspaper story) and strewn about messages kinda irritated me. The only reason I beat this game and got all the endings was because I wanted to see the story through, and my special ending that I get from doing the collectathon wasn't great.
All in all it isn't a terrible game but because the puzzles are kinda lame, the philosophical questioning is kinda limited (it doesn't really matter), and the story is all over the place.
