I initially passed this by because of the lizard front and center on the banner. Curiosity got the better of me and I got it on sale. Glad I did, it's super fun. I don't play multiplayer very often in general, but it's also quite fun here.

Travel as a wandering martial artist muggi- *ahem*, I mean, righteously sparring to "exchange pointers" with everyone across the land.

Gift people their favourite things, then beat the ever living cra- *ahem*, exchange pointers with them on a friendly wager to retrieve the item you gifted... Then give it back to them and repeat, until they learn to love you.

Dantians, meridians, acupoints, qi, spirit, will, intent, essence, martial arts, cultivation! *starts frothing at the mouth*

A damn good Wuxia game with a very solid English translation. If you like Wuxia or Xianxia, play it. If you have no exposure to the genre...you might have a bit of a learning curve with all the new proper nouns. If you're going to take a chance on the genre though, this is a damn good place to start.

+++ Lots of QoL over Cyber Sleuth. Lots. Like, so much.

= The story was 'fine'. Much worse than Cyber Sleuth imo. The very prevalent 'Friendship is Magic' thing is a Digimon standard (even season 1 of the show was all about weaponizing friendship, love, courage etc.). So whatever. Not many stories involving time go without horrendous plot holes though. This is not an exception.

+/- Cyber Sleuth differentiates digimon not only with unique active skills, but also with their own unique passive (nearly 350 digimon = ~350 unique passives total). This game has about 450 digimon, but only differentiates with the unique active skills. The unique passive skill was rolled into the Personality system, and there are less than 50 total. This is bad because it is more homogenized. This is good because in Cyber Sleuth, only a small portion of the total digimon were good postgame.

+/- In addition to the above, in Cyber Sleuth uniques (both active and passive) had a very high spectrum of usefulness. Some were crazy good. Others were garbage. Many were interesting and worth building a team around. In this game, everything has been reigned in. That means everything is more balanced (mostly), but also means everything is much more boring. No skills really stand out. In this game there is "meh" and "meh+". Whether this is good or bad is up to you. Personally, I preferred Cyber Sleuth's take on it. Cyber Sleuth had busted good skills, and had PVP. This is purely single player, and the skills are milquetoast. Weird.

- Recent Digimon games are fantastic about making the player not the main character. And then making the real main character; an NPC, rather insufferable and or useless. These games go really hard on this idea.

- Goes out with a whimper. I played through on Hard. The following isn't a spoiler, but might take the wind out of a player's sails to read it. The final boss is not fun. It's not difficult either. It's a heavily scripted slog. I'm not even sure you need to deal damage to win. Just have the defense and healing to survive until each successive 'plot event'. The battle basically wins itself. What a weird decision.

I enjoyed it. Definitely worth playing if you like Digimon. Not sure whether I'd recommend it to someone who is indifferent to the franchise though.

PS: The Geckomon arc was great, and the card game sucks.

I grabbed this on a whim because of the (at the time) Overwhelmingly Positive rating, and it being of a genre I've quite enjoyed. I underestimated just how much traction meme games get.

I've played a lot of this genre now. Besides this game's different camera angle, it is rather bland. Could have used another 6 months to a year in the oven. It has potential, but, potential does not earn it a recommendation right now.

Been on a 'Creature Collector' binge lately. There's lots of detailed reviews already, and I don't have anything in particular to say, but I wanted to leave a review since approval %s make a difference.

Fun game. Lots of customization. In keeper battles I always forget that your 1st turn only gets 2 actions. Yep.

Lots of fun. I'm at Depth 169 at the time of reviewing. Main game ends at Depth 64. From what I've read, I'm barely into the postgame.

• The amount of customization and choices can be overwhelming until you get a grasp on it and pace yourself. I only had one fused creature for the main game. I grinded for a few maps to match the final boss of the main game. No grinding otherwise so far. Otherwise, keeping up with equipment and spell gems was enough to occupy my time until postgame. Trying to do everything for everyone before you settle into the game feels like it'd burn you out quickly.

• Postgame is a party building sim first and foremost. Level grinding isn't really viable. Slowly build party synergies.

• Postgame has so much stuff it can feel kinda spread-sheety. Keeping track of so much isn't for everyone, but it is fun once you get it. Again, if I had to give 1 piece of advice, pace yourself.

A fun creature collector with a couple caveats:

-Unlike shinies in Pokemon, there are a number of achievements tied to catching bootlegged creatures (one for each type), so I feel that the bootlegging rate should really be higher. There are methods for increasing the rate postgame that I haven't unlocked, so this might be fine later?

-Some of the platforming segments can be pretty jank; jumping on boxes to jump to a higher ledge often caused the box under your feet to spaz out instead. It was really only noticeable during the one Alice in Wonderland segment though.

+Gotta mention how convenient changing skills is. You can "peel" off skills from any creature and place it on any other 'compatible' creature.

Very worth playing.

Raidou's back hee-ho!~

Of all the older Megaten games, I thought Raidou had the smallest chance of ever coming back. But here we are.

Also, you can control TWO DEMONS! Count 'em! One! TWO! That's a whole extra demon! (really though, the combat is even better than in the 2nd game, once you remember all the controls...)

I loved the original. When there's a lot of time between releases in a series, there's reason to worry that it will not have its predecessor's charm.

No problem. Tbh, it's just even better. And the writing is still funny.

I'm just...really happy about it. It's crazy that it not only met but exceeded my hopes. Speaks to it being a rare accomplishment for games these days.

edit: Finished most of the postgame. Still a great game, but I wanted to add: For some inexplicable reason, they simplified the combat from the first game by not a small amount.
