I don't typically leave reviews but as a fan of the OG and FF Stan since childhood I figured why not.

Overall a very good game if you love the series. I had played the demo and tried to pick it up 2-3x without ever really giving it a shot until recently.

To start, the graphics are insane. Beautiful both in cutscenes as well as the gameplay. The UI and various menus are all gorgeous. I loved being able to see some really memorable areas of Midgar in their deserved glory. This game does a really good job of expanding and fleshing out the city that never sleeps. I didn't love staying in Midgar the whole time but that's neither here nor there since it's only disc 1 of the OG.

The story is fleshes out and given more depth as well which as a fanboy I ate up. They made some changes as well which I won't get into due to spoilers but I actually don't mind the changes as it makes the game new and exciting even for fans of the original. Square is trying to make you fall in love and wonder what's going to happen next and for me it works. I got so hype, so sad, and so awe struck at different times that it made it worth it. I cannot wait to see what Rebirth brings.

The negatives are as follows for me - I wish the AI was smarter for your allies. Or maybe theres no AI at all. I was thinking this was going to be similar to FFXII and hoping when I had a status ailment for example, I wish my healer would use the corresponding spell to rid me of it, but had to manually do it myself 99% of the time. Additionally, the side quests are complete trash and while they did some small level of world building, ended up being completely forgettable. Skip the side quests entirely (in the main game, haven't started the Intermission DLC yet). Mainline the game and i think you will not be disappointed. Also there were a series of boss battles at the end which I kept thinking "OK, this is the final boss" and due to there being a number back to back I started to get annoyed like "just finish this already" although I was extremely happy at the final final encounter. Completely changed my thoughts on the end gameplay and even my friends watching said "Damn this is like one of the sickest final fights I've seen in a while".

I am stoked to go back and finish the DLC, to replay the original, and most importantly to play FF7R- Rebirth. I am genuinely considering buying it on PS5 to play on my roommates system. The story, the graphics, all of it. It may be because I am such a fan of the franchise in general but even if you aren't I'd say give the series a go, you won't be disappointed, and while the original isn't 100% necessary, I think it is worth a play if you haven't and end up liking this game.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I've owned this game for a long time, but never gave it a real shot. A friend of mine recommended this over and over before playing it. I finally gave it a shot after having game ADHD and beat it in about 8 hours. I would highly highly recommend this game. As someone who struggles (and is currently struggling) with mental health I could not recommend this game anymore. It hits very close to home and the story blew me away. As someone who rarely finishes this game I cannot stress enough how happy I am to complete this.

What a masterpiece.
