Holocure - Save the Fans is a free rougelike, bullet hell type game based on the Vtuber Corporation Hololive. The player must defeat cure hordes of love stricken fans using special abilities and weapons.

To start, the player is decently weak with no upgrades and only around five characters to pick from. As the player progresses they will earn coins that can be used to purchase upgrades and new characters. Each new character that the player obtains has their own special abilities that no other character can use. As well, their main weapon differs from each other, such as some being faster, short-ranged attacks compared to a slow projectile based attack.

When in an actual stage, as the player cures fans, fans will drop items, with the most common item drop being experience points. Collecting enough EXP will allow the player to level up and obtain new upgrades. This upgrade can be a multitude of things, being: a new weapon, an item, a skill, or increasing your character's base stats. The most interesting part of these upgrades is that they do not replace anything you already have (eg. if you choose to get a weapon, you will simply add that weapon on top of the weapons you already have, etc.). However, aside from the base stat upgrades, these other upgrades are limited. You can only have six items and six weapons per game. This also includes the base weapon you start each round with. Since you cannot get rid of an item mid game, this means you must pick each upgrade carefully to make sure each one you choose works well with each other, and for your own playstyle. As well, skills can be unlocked instead of choosing a weapon or item, and these skills are specific to each character, making each character feel unique and being helpful in general. Skills, weapons, and items can all be upgraded themselves on level up if you do not, or can not, get any new items or weapons.
Enemies will periodically spawn as the round progresses. Some of these enemies can be pattern enemies, bosses, or mini-bosses. The time when these enemies spawn is always consistent with the timer in the current round. To complete a round, you must defeat the final boss. Since time is what determines when the final boss spawns, taking out fans and mini-bosses are simply used to get upgrades before the final boss shows up (on top of also making the final boss less annoying to deal with due to less enemies). This also means that rounds get progressively longer and harder, with the very first stage taking around 20 minutes at minimum.

On top of the standard stage mode, there are a few other modes to try out too. As offshoots to stage mode, there is endless mode which is an unending version of stage mode. Time mode, where the player must cure a certain number of fans as quickly as possible. Lastly, there is the Holo House which is a relaxing side mode used to get materials for items that can be used in stage and endless mode. By growing crops, fishing, and mining, you can obtain items and upgrades that help in stage and endless mode, like food that can increase your attack or increase health, etc. Holo House itself has additional game modes like the Tower of Suffering which is a clone of the game Jump King, as well as the Usada Casino which can be used to gamble for PekoChips which can then be traded for upgrades and effects.

Overall, Holocure - Save the Fans is a very challenging, but fun rougelike, bullet hell game based on the Vtuber company Hololive. The level-up system compliments the gameplay by keeping things randomized and by allowing the player to choose what they want. The extra side modes are also fun and relaxing as well, adding another layer to the game and adding more reasons to explore.

Umamusume: Pretty Derby is a free, gacha style mobile game available on PC through Steam, or on mobile devices. In this world, horses are nonexistent, and in their place: horse girls!

The game is widely considered by many to be a rougelike type game. When doing a "career" run the player must train their uma musume’s stats to complete goals. But, failure to complete a goal in time results in a failure for the whole run, and the player must start from the beginning. However after a run, even if the run ends in failure or not, the player can use the previous run as "inspiration" which can result in bonuses and stat increases for the next run.

This gameplay loop can be quite addictive, especially if you haven’t played a game like this before. Even more so when you consider the gacha system in the game.

The gacha system is similar to gambling. Using in game currency, you can press a button to attempt to have a chance at having a rare item. This can either be a rare uma musume, which enables the player to attempt more career runs with different stats and abilities. Or, a card, which increase stats gained. While this may turn people off from the game, the truth is, it is decently easy to get free gacha attempts even without paying real money due to the developers generosity and the increase of in-game currency being given away.

As well, the stories these umas have are surprisingly good too. Every uma gained through the gacha system can be played in a new career playthrough. Each uma not only has their own stats, but has their own story and personality associated that’s also based on a real life horse of the same name. These uma’s stories are filled with humorous interactions, and surprisingly heart wrenching stories as well. The good end for each uma also depends on how well you do during the career.

Despite seeming like a simple port of an old japanese mobile game for overseas players, Umamusume: Pretty Derby is a surprisingly fun rougelike mobile game with fun characters, addicting gameplay (in a good way), and it’s free!

A very cute little adventure and story game that just happens to use the Portal 2 branch of Source Engine.

The game itself has little, if anything, to do with Portal and its universe at all but that's okay. The story is presented in a way I've never seen before in a Portal 2 mod, where text is displayed on screen next to the "speaking" objects. I actually found that the main gameplay is actually pretty fun too. Simply explore a building and pick up trash. The story comes from the choices you make, much like The Stanley Parable . The music is also quite enjoyable to listen to. The few issues I've had with this game are the fact that I (seemingly) got softlocked by not bringing a specific item through a loading zone with me and not being able to go back and get it. ASSUMING I was actually softlocked there, this is a pretty glaring oversight. I also managed to get softlocked in the second map of the game by accidentally jumping off a railing where the door would not reopen, forcing me to either restart the map or cheat and use noclip to get back to where I was. One more point that, while not really an issue, I feel like there is a section of the game that takes way too much time to complete if you got to this ending. This ending being the Roblox style "obby" ending.

Overall: No portals or even really any puzzles, but a cute story game nonetheless where I've only really had minor issues and nitpicks.

As someone who DIDN'T read the included book , the concept of the game itself is actually okay, but I feel as though the game itself isn't actually very fun to play through.

The game suffers from a lot of Portal 2 splitscreen jank and other weird oddities. The main problem I have with this game is that it's a co-op only mod, but one player is stuck while the other roams free to look around until the other player wants a turn looking around their area. I think this concept could be really fun but is bogged down by the fact that there's too much to look at in these massive rooms and very little for the other player to do. This is why the game works best as a singleplayer "splitscreen" experience. That way you're always doing something. Like stated earlier though, the game's massive rooms and many attention points and custom items leads to the solutions to a lot of puzzles feeling not very clear. Playing with an actual partner can help reduce the work load of the thinking process but, again, the game is very boring to play in multiplayer due to the fact that one person has to sit there and do basically nothing until both players are inevitably freed. As well, ALL of the the game's maps were made using BEEmod. I myself don't have a problem with using BEEmod to make maps, but the maps include many custom BEEmod assets that many players may not understand what they do and this can get frustrating really quickly. Even then, I can understand the feelings others have of the level designer being lazy due to not using the more advanced Hammer map editor, but again, I don't care much for what the level designer used as long as the puzzles are good. In which I consider these not super well designed.

Overall: This game's main concept had potential but I feel that it falls flat due to poor level design and puzzles.

SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS is a re-release of a beloved Sonic The Hedgehog game with another game added for the price of one modern triple A game, similar to what Nintendo did for Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. The original Sonic Generations half of the game is nearly identical to the original in terms of game-play aside from the addition of the Drop Dash from Sonic Mania and Sonic Frontiers. Most of the dialogue and cutscenes have been slightly altered as well, now being in HD and allowing for a more fresh take on the game while not completely changing the game's story.
The Shadow Generations half of the game is entirely brand new. The game is more story focused in comparison to the Sonic Generations half but its game-play is nothing to scoff at either. The game-play is very similar to the Sonic Generations half but is now using the new engine first seen in Sonic Forces and Sonic Frontiers. This does mean that there are slight differences to the games but they are still very similar enough to the point you can switch between the two and get back into them quickly. The story in Shadow Generations begins very similarly to Sonic Generations but adds more depth to the story and helps in getting to know Shadow's story and develop it so even non-Sonic fans can pick up the story and enjoy it.
Overall, SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS provides a way to play the original Sonic Generations in HD with additional moves while Shadow Generations provides a way to play a new Sonic game that has more story depth and amazingly addicting game-play all for the price of $50 minimum.
