While Rome 2 was a mess at release, Creative Assembly did a fantastic job fixing so many of the issues it had at release, culminating in the Emperor Edition re-release. It's still not perfect or the best game in the series but it is a great game, an easy one to recommend and it's great to see that they're continuing to support it with the new patches and DLC.

One of the GOATs. If you can get past the dated graphics, it still holds up amazingly well. Just incredible game design.
