TL:DR
this game is the definitive edition of the original Bravely Default release for the 3DS.
i would say "no notes" but this is truly a piece of art that stands the test of time and bears having its praises sung.

the game itself, from the gameplay to the graphics, is nearly untouched from the original article.
i honestly respect this decision to keep the experience as authentic as possible.
often times, too many games' remasters have noticeable differences and discrepancies.
this is an example of one whose integrity and fidelity needed no improvement upon.

even if i hadn't fallen for the nostalgia of revisiting everything after ten years, it's still a great FF-style RPG game.
ordinarily i strongly dislike FF-style RPGs, but the customization and strategy behind this game really sell it for me.

to those unaware, your Defend option now saves your "turn economy" to act multiple times in a single turn later.
the entire game's core centers around knowing when you or the enemy are going to play it safe with Default, or cash in on an all-out attack with Braves.
this turn management resource, as well as the complete customizable character builds and freedom of player agency over crafting a build for party synergy, is what really drives me to play this game.
even now after ten years, there's loadouts i haven't tried yet that i'm taking the time to learn, now that the remake is here.

additionally, the player characters, non-player characters, and even the monsters in this game are very cute and charming.
they cooperate, they fight, they cry, they laugh. they're completely and utterly amazing characters that i find are very easy to root for and cant help but want to know more about.
watching and playing their story makes me wish that i could be their friends too. maybe in some way, we all are.

in this day and age, sticking with the low-polygon low-resolution graphics of the 3DS' models and textures is a bold choice, but i would be so bold as to say it's perfectly authentic.
not going to name names of games, but i'm sick and tired of games that want to be the "next big thing" by burning my house down with how much smoke and fumes my middle-of-the-road PC has to exhaust trying to run hyper-realistic graphics.
i appreciate games that look and feel like games. appearances are only secondary to how i feel when i want to truly enjoy a game, and "immersion" is nothing but conjecture to me.

now for the elephant in the room.
i, for one, am glad that they kept the international release version's censorship changes, which made the Japanese version questionable at best; such as aging up the characters to a sexually mature age for the game's explicit or suggestive content, as well as some of the more ridiculous outfits that you could unlock if you really wanted to.
playing the game guilt-free with knowledge that i am not a nonce is a huge plus that we often take for granted.

next, let me preface that BDFF Remaster does NOT require an internet connection to play nor take advantage of the game's features that utilize it, for which i am extremely thankful.
some of the 3DS' features and questionable original release's features have been reworked or removed.

the StreetPass function used to collect workers for the village rebuild mini-game has been replaced by what i presume is Square Enix' bespoke BDFF Remastered servers which spawn workers in the actual city locations in-game based on worldwide online presence.
i cannot stress enough how great this feature is for making the village rebuild not just feasible but also profitable for gameplay progression, because of the low odds of my childhood school circle having a 3DS with StreetPass enabled.
nowadays you can be visited by other players from the world over.
i have a few Japanese players in my village despite being American, and i hope i've helped those same few players with my own presence as a villager in their worlds, or summons in their battles.

additionally, all traces of microtransactions through "BP Drinks" have been obliterated.
it was not only an unwelcome addition to the 3DS version, but an unnecessary one too as the game was completely beatable within casual rights without it.

finally, there's even more content added to the game through optional minigames.
they added a rhythm game and a ship sailing game, both of which are played with two hands.
the intention was to play the games with two computer mice, though mercifully they do also allow using a controller or a keyboard + mouse setup which is perfectly adequate.
it's completely optional content which provides an advantage at the stage you can cash in-game tokens for items, weapons, and armor, many of which will be replaced by better gear in future chapters anyways.
it's completely harmless and totally optional content which i am pleasantly surprised they bothered to add.

in conclusion...
the gameplay aged from grape juice i enjoyed as a child, to fine wine i can enjoy as an adult.
the graphics are also relatively untouched, which in this modern day of unrecognizable remasters, i accept with open arms.
the sensible changes the international release made regarding censorship remains intact for a guilt-free experience.
the online connection features are not only reworked, but have completely reincarnated into something workable.
the predatory nature of microtransactions from the original release have been replaced by fun and challenging minigames.

this game is the definitive edition of the original Bravely Default release for the 3DS.

closing thoughts;
Square Enix and affiliates are in no way obligated to do so, but my personal hope is that Bravely Second is remastered next.
it is my favorite game in the Bravely saga thus far, and having all three games available on PC would be awesome.
i'll wait however long it takes for it to happen. i already waited twelve years for this. what's a few more?

leaving a **cautiously** positive review because there's no "yes, but..." on Steam reviews.

the good news is that the game is now in a much more stable state, but this kind of groundbreaking gate of entry taking an entire year to implement speaks volumes about Monster Hunter's priority in the pipeline.

i still enjoy playing this game with my friends, and of course the added challenges are welcome, but i fear for the arms-racing event horizon, where casual players such as myself get fed up with trying to keep up with the game's difficulty curve and eventually stop playing a game that stresses more than it relaxes.

it's ok

pros:
-> if you're a fan of top down fighting and dungeon crawling, this game can suck up your free time like a sponge
-> it's also a lot of fun to play with friends, up to a party of 4 players, from real life or haven
-> art style isn't shabby and pretty easy on the eyes, fun for any age range in the whole family
-> this game is already pretty old, but there's still a lot to do for newcomers and old pros alike
---> combat is very flush, with tons of flashy weapons and even more bad guys to use them on
---> there's plenty of background lore and tidbits like that hidden in this game if you're into that
---> feeling fabulous? theres lots of armor and accessories to help you look fly, and thats pretty fun
---> join or create a guild to form a small community with more than just 3 other players

cons:
-> there's a lot of incredibly useful hidden mechanics that the game really should teach you, like using your shield to cancel attack animations and increasing reaction time
-> a lot of the better weapons and armor can only be achieved through unconventional ways or buying it at an inflamed price, which can throw a wrench in your plans for your perfect arsenal
-> the game makes you grind a lot for ingame currency to be able to pass through a lot of the game
---> a remedy to this is if you do your homework and plan out what arsenal you want by the end of the game so that you dont make stupid descisions too early on in the game
---> the main issue with the grind wall is because of the "alchemy orb" crafting system and the "hall of heroes" quests that make sure you have the resources and equipment to go into higher difficulty floors

-> there's not really any recent updates at all anymore, and the community is slowly shrinking...

conclusion:
i think this game won't last that much longer anymore,
but you should still get it and play if you like top down shooters and dungeon crawlers;
i'm pretty sure this game is worth the free time it swallows despite being a free game
