hoLY SH!T WHAT
WHAT WAS THAT
WHat the,,,,?? Like every time I thought I couldn't get even MORE confused the game proved me wrong. Huge props for that I guess?
Okay I'm trying to... articulate my thoughts on this very VERY unique masterpiece.
The game is set like a movie. You do control the main character only like half of the time. It's really more like an interactive film. Which I don't mind, it was great.
I can't even really talk about the story. There are twists and turns, you often find yourself wondering what's even real. And this all happens without a single word being spoken? Like I can hardly believe it myself but I seriously don't remember the characters talking like,, ever. The more I think about it, the more impressive it seems that this game manages to suck you into the story without you even NOTICING no one's talking.
Sure, the lack of dialogue is propably not irrelevant to the fact that I'm still so confused about the entire game but I think the developers made the right choice here. It wouldn't be the same otherwise.
Now I know this is a very confusing review but I think that's only fitting for this game. I'm definitely gonna need to replay it though haha.
If you like simple animation, movie-like games with great soundtrack, mystery and being completely confused for like an hour and a half, this might be the perfect game for you!

Edit: I'm so surprised by all the negative reviews, for real, this game is genius.

This game is considered a classic. And rightfully so!
Tbh at first I wasn't sure why so many considered this game to be so great. The first half it was just puzzles. Just completing levels. So I was like,, yea, fun game, but i don't get the hype. BUT THE SECOND PART OF THE GAME OH!! You think you play this casual puzzle game and suddenly it hits you with a STORY?? And don't get me started on the ending!! That sh!t was GOOD like I can't believe I felt so emotional during the credits!!
Funnily enough I didn't know the game is set in the same universe as Half-Life so I had some 'oh hEY WAIT' moments, which was great!

I wanted to play this game since it came out. Now I finally bought it and I can't say I'm disappointed!
It's sooo trippy, I can't remember how many times I just sat there like '?????' This game really is unlike any other!
Sometimes though, it kinda turned into a horror game, which wasn't bad or anything, it was just REALLY unexpected!
However, if you want to play the game because you like challenging puzzles, you might not get what you expect. The puzzles, while they're unique and fun, are relatively easy and most of them are straightforward and really don't take long to solve (i.e. only interactable object in the room). But if you enjoy a short colorful, confusing and fun game, it's definitely worth it!
It also kinda reminded me of The Stanley Parable, so if that's your thing, Superliminal might be for you!
The online multiplayer is very fun as well! You get to explore some entirely new rooms as you race other players.

Still amazed this game came out like ten years ago. Like, the gameplay and graphics must've been out of this world back then and even today they hold up so well. I also played Arkham Asylum, which I liked just as much. I kinda regret not playing those games sooner.

I love how you can make Batman behave like the most socially awkward person ever by choosing not to respond to any dialogue.
Jokes aside, this game is really fun. It's more like an interactive movie (think something like Heavy Rain) so it relies more on the story than actual gameplay. It's not that long, I completed the game in less than a week and now I'm really excited to play the sequel.

"Tell Me Why" is one of these games that hit me right in the feels. If only it was a bit longer, then it probably would've even surpassed Life is Strange in my opinion. But even as it is, it's a very special game.
The main characters are the twins Alyson and Tyler who meet again after being separated for ten years. As they clean out their childhood home for sale, they uncover the trauma and memories connected to the place. Which is also their superpower. They can visualize their memories together, as well as talk to each other in their thoughts.
I really like that superpower, it totally fits the whole story. Instead of feeling like an extra subplot,, thingy, it's implemented really well.
The relationship between the twins is probably my favorite thing in the whole game. Despite being away from each other for many years and being a bit awkward at first, you can really tell how much they love each other. Maybe it's the twin thing, but compared to the siblings from Life is Strange 2, their relationship felt a lot more fleshed out and "real".
But not only the twins but also the side characters feel like real people. Whether you like them or not, they fit the story perfectly. My favorite side character is Michael - if you play the game, you know why (i don't think it's possible to not like him lol).
Now to the more heavy aspects of the game. Without spoiling anything, the game opens with Tyler as a child sitting in a police station, claiming he stabbed his mother after she tried to kill him. So yeah fair warning, there is a very strong focus on the traumatic childhood of the twins.
Also later in the game Alyson deals with panic attacks, which are portrayed pretty realistic in my opinion.
Tyler, who is a trans man, faces microagressions with basically every second person he meets, so there's that. He handles it pretty well though and there are no trans slurs or openly transphobic attacks against him. No dead naming either, which was a very pleasant surprise. I want more games like this that treat trans characters like normal people instead of some special thing, that needs to be explained like the audience is a bunch of three year olds.
Last but not least, the sceneries are so so beautiful. Dontnod games just get more and more impressive with the graphics, it's amazing! I can't help but explore every location, especially the outdoor ones. Since the game is kinda short, there aren't many locations though. Basically, perfect game, it's just too short. I wish there'd be a sequel but that's probably not gonna happen. I'm really gonna miss the characters.

Usually I like walking simulators. I do, I really do. However, this one is just,,, there's nothing. No story, nothing you can interact with, no explaination of the world... The description of the game on steam says something about a man who travels up a mountain, searching for the truth of his existence... If I hadn't read that description, I wouldn't even guessed that. There's no indication of who your character is even supposed to be and "his" thoughts are voiced by a rather feminine sounding voice (no judgement) and even the wise words this voice provides from time to time add nothing to the game. They don't explain anything, they're just phrases you can find on every basic pinterest moodboard.
The game looks pretty, that's all. Also I'm grateful for the sprint option, I don't know if I could've brought myself to finish the game if there wasn't one.

After it has been sitting in my steam library for like 5 years I finally played "Everybody's Gone to the Rapture".
You play as an unnamed person entering an abandoned area consisting of small villages where everybody went missing. Throughout the story you uncover what happened to the population.
"Everybody's Gone to the Rapture" is not just a simple walking simulator. The story it tells and the places you discover are beautiful, interesting and even tragic. You learn so much about characters you never meet and even though there isn't much to interact with it's more than I usually expect from walking sims (which is... nothing lol). The voice acting is really awesome and really impressing considering the voices have to carry every emotion since we never see a characters face.
Only downside is that the walking speed is sooo slow. For normal walking sims that might work but the map in this game is HUGE and there is no fast travel option. Exploring the whole area takes AGES.

Very cool and colorful game. Some really amazing songs that just make the game super enjoyable.
Only downside is that it takes some time to get into it. At first I thought I was never gonna be able to press the buttons at the right time, but once I played it for some time it got easier and easier.
Huge plus for being able to change the controls to any buttons you want to. I changed them to WASD for up movements and arrow keys for down movements and it's perfect.

Wow. Just wow.
I don't even know where to start.

Everything in this game is very beautiful. Especially the soundtrack. I don't think I ever played a game before where I liked the music this much. Seriously.
The artstyle is also very nice, I could just walk around in this game for hours lol. I think it's very aesthetically pleasing.

I'm not sure HOW random these routes are that you play but I really really like how there isn't one linear story. You don't know who you gonna encounter next on Road 96. And there are some VERY interesting characters. And almost all of them are super likeable in my opinion. They all have different motivations and goals. Some of them are tied together.

Now this game is very political,, just a heads up cuz I know many people don't like overly political gaming. I loved it, even though the political issues seemed to be presented a bit too simple and basic. But that's like no real criticism, since this is a roadtrip videogame, not a politics simulator.

You don't play as one character but as six different ones throughout the story. These characters have no actual personality or info on them, except that they are all teens looking to escape the country. You're pretty much free to shape their opinions and motivations as you play. I really liked that aspect. Never seen that in a game before, really interesting.

I'm definitely going to replay Road 96, mainly because I'm still missing some of the encounters with the characters. I really hope I'll see more of these kinda games in the future, this was just so so much fun.
