The game is surprisingly fair, and very fun to boot. The only thing you can buy at all with real money, is cosmetic items, and 2x boosts for XP and Blutes. Blutes are used to unlock all the weapon parts, and while 2x would make you gain them faster, it doesn't matter much for a few reasons. For one, some of the best weapons in the game take no unlocks at all, or just a few parts to build. You can however level up parts over time with XP and by spending a large number of blutes, but even when maxed out, the difference in damage isn't substantial. It's useful to take a sniper, and upgrade the damage so that it does 50 to the body instead of 48-49, to ensure a 2 hit kill, but that's really about it. Upgrading the weapons takes TONS of the blutes and a lot of playtime with each part, so it really inst worth it, as opposed to the versatility of having all the items unlocked instead.

You can basically pay to get the tiny increases in damage twice as fast, but in the end, a better player will still beat you, and that's the only thing that really matters. In this case the base game is very fun and customization, but it could have all been ruined by greed. The character customization items are very expensive, BUT they are all completely optional of course, on top of the fact that they give out free items. The prize for playing once a day gives items sometimes, and they are less rare than you'd imagine. They have also given out shirts from Alienware and Razer, items for playing in the beta and on launch day, streaming the game on twitch, attending events, etc etc, and I'm sure more will come in the future. So really, even the free players get to have some individuality as well.

I can't recommend it enough. Support the game if you like what they have done, but just know that you aren't going to be treated unfairly if you don't/can't.
