You'd be surprised, but most experts believe it to derive from the combination of "♥♥♥" and "sock" as it refers to a sock one uses to ♥♥♥ in.

However, for whatever reason people didn't, long ago, put in writing what object they stuff their ♥♥♥♥ into before busting a nut.
