Harry became an accidental Horcrux when Voldemort's Killing Curse backfired on him. The subconscious mind does things of which a person is unaware. It is true even for Voldemort. His mind perceived an existential threat in the rebounding curse. His subconscious stepped in and created still another Horcrux. Voldemort's conscious mind was distracted and did not notice. Deadly peril has a way doing that.
