Early Access Review
Thronefall is a simple, fun, yet at times challenging little game. On the surface, it's another tower defense you've seen a lot of times before, but the levels are well designed and the enemies are interesting. Playing as a king riding around on a horse, you have to keep your castle from being destroyed, building up your defenses and the economy as the waves of enemies get progressively more difficult.

It does take some getting used to, there is a bit of a learning curve as you figure out which units and buildings will be the most beneficial to you. As you play through the game, you'll earn perks, weapons, and additional unit types to help you out, although it seems like quite a few of them aren't too helpful as you'll find yourself using the same ones again and again. Some perks feel very overpowered and some don't feel like perks at all. Another slight criticism is that the units available to you don't have any stats for you compare and contrast, you have to rely solely on their description. As with the perks, you'll find yourself using the same units because some are clearly better than others. There are also negative effects that can make the enemies stronger, faster, have more health, etc., or prevent you from building walls, towers, units, that sort of thing if you like more of a challenge.

As of this writing, there are 5 maps and an "endless" mode where you pick a map with the enemies randomized (which should be an option on the regular mode, but currently isn't). So there isn't too much content, but the game does a good job of getting you to keep playing because it's so fun and it makes you want to win. Each map has several quests to make things interesting and give them replayability; you'll be required to beat them all to get every achievement. Thronefall is great, well worth the price and I'll be looking forward to seeing how the game comes along during its early access phase.
