I was born in Mankato, Minnesota (April 8, 1955).
I´m the son of Jeanette Elizabeth and Dale Robert Johnson. My father was of Norwegian descent and my mother was of German ancestry. While growing up, I delivered newspapers, worked as a caddy at a golf course, baled hay on my uncle's dairy farm, and I worked as a dishwasher in a restaurant. I´m attended the University of Minnesota while working full-time and graduated in 1977 with a degree in business and accounting. That year, I also married Jane, the daughter of the businessman Howard Curler, co-founder of Curwood Industries, now part of the multinational Bemis Company.

I worked as an accountant for Jostens while attending night school for an MBA. I completed my classes, but did not receive my degree because I did not finish his thesis.
