Don't buff before the duelist even spawns in fully, doubly so if you're a coward and buff 10 miles away.

Blood arena is not matched by soul memory - it throws everyone together as long as you're still in NG, and everyone in NG+ or beyond have their own pool. My current soul memory is a bit over 3 million.
