Absolutely terrible game!
I've only played around 600 hours, so far, and I'm already bored of real life.
I suggest you save your money and don't buy any other games, as this apile of garbage will have you building 150 block high towers from bedrock and smashing stupid fat zombitzes in the head with spiked things, until you eventually have to go out and get more in life currency, to prevent your body from decaying (apparently, real life me needs food and drink, too... what a liability!).
So, yeah... it's an utter disgrace.
If I die in my computer chair, please don't take my stuff - hopefully my reincarnated self will be drawn to it by some form of radar indicator.

Original review at bottom:

Well, what a difference a year makes! Returned to NMS this weekend after being so disappointed at launch, that I felt cheated. The game was unplayably repetitive, empty and shallow.

Now, a year after release, it's starting to become the vibrant universe we were all promised! I'm actually hooked. I feel like I have goals in this game and a future to aim for. The locations feel more varied and the environments of the planets I've been to so far have all been very different, some with huge rift valleys, one with colourful cave systems just below the surface, another with oceans, another frozen solid with a plethora of weird little animals.

I'm currently doing missions to get my cash up, so I can get a really nice rifle and give my ship more slots, but also started a base in another system that I need to build up so I can get tech for harvesting new things (hazmat suit being one).

Thanks, Hello Games, for geting me through a really awful weekend of illness and antibiotic side-effects!

--------

When I first started playing the game, I had a few bugs here and there but performance was pretty good, maxxed out. I enjoyed it, it was what I expected and I was looking forward to the ever changing planets, varied races of aliens etc etc.

Unfortunately, after wasting half a day on this game, I feel like I've attached £40 to a brick and thrown it through my own window.

It's dull! Very very very dull... if one could actually discover anything through exploring, that would be a start, but it's the same thing over and over and everything looks, feels and sounds the same. There's no excitement. The so-called weather patterns are just "oh, it's getting a bit chilly" or "it might get a bit windy" but then nothing really happens. The planets have the same surface, plants and animals all over. There are 3 races of aliens... that's it... Why is there NOTHING in here? It's like a supermarket that only sells varieties of cornflake!

It's such a shame that there's so little to do in NMS. There's no incentive to explore, at all, no reason to look for upgrades, nothing to build (all you "build" is uninteresting and ineffective slot-fillers for your suit, multitool and ship) and simply no reason to go anywhere.

Save your money. This game is a huge disappointment and the least interactive "sandbox" game I've ever played.
