Left 4 Dead 2 is one of the best cooperative games in existence, and I believe these are the ingredients to its success:

1. Excellent online co-op. Unlike many other cooperative games, in Left 4 Dead 2 the players are strongly dependent on each other. When someone is grabbed by a jockey or pounced by hunter, etc., there is nothing that player can do but wait for a teammate to clear it, and indeed the performance of a team is correlated to how quickly and effectively they can help each other.
1.1 This game handles lag relatively well, which is inherent to the game mechanics. After all, the game consists mostly of ranged combat which doesn't often require high precision or agility. This allows players from the whole world to play with each other.
2. Vibrant workshop. Everything is possible, from changing character and weapon models and sounds to adding entire multi-chapter fan-made campaigns (my personal favorite is Questionable Ethics, which is a very unique campaign that pushes what is possible with the game's assets). It seems that the only limit to the Workshop is the time and creativity that the fans have, rather than technical limitations.
2.1 Vocalizations. The so-called "radial menu" that comes standard with the game allows you to make your character [Laugh] or be grumpy (Rochelle:)"Could this really get any worse? I don't think so.", say Thank you (sometimes used sarcastically), compliments/boasts (Nick:)"Wow, nice!", (Coach:)"Mm! How you like me now!", and basic things like "Yeah" or "No", and more. With workshop items, you can even allow your characters to make very unconvincing death screams, cry out "This thing is killing me!", say You're welcome (as a reply to someone's sarcastic Thank you), warn about certain enemies, etc. Even lines from the Campaign mode can be added and then used out of context "Francis, that's a car!". Valve has said that Left 4 Dead is a game in which the players create their own stories. To me, these vocalizations are a major part of this concept, and they are pretty unique to Left 4 Dead (which shouldn't be the case). The only downside here is that not all voice lines can be used everywhere and always, and in the Survival mode, most of the Campaign voice lines don't work unfortunately.
3. The game is derpy. Chargers can carry you to new, unexplored regions that instantly become your funeral, Smokers with their 15 meter long tongues drag you away from your friends as your character screams "Nooooo!!", Tanks when close enough can set you off on involuntary parabolic trajectories towards the hall of shame.

Most of my hours were put in the Survival mode, which is a game mode where you have to survive for as long as possible with limited resources. Ammo can be gained infinite times from ammo stacks at fixed locations. Medical kits, pills, grenades, etc. are limited however. I have identified these key points that explain its appeal (on top of the above-mentioned points):
1. Asymmetry. You are a team of four against a horde of tens of zombies at the same time. This creates what you might call controlled chaos, in which every decision matters. Changing your position by half a meter can dramatically alter the path of the enemies, such that you can't be harmed by certain types or dragged down, though this can lower your visibility. Changing your shooting priorities will alter the enemies that you face in close combat. During close combat you are forced to make quick decisions which can either be satisfying if successful or hilarious when it's not. Using a grenade or pills/adrenaline shot at a crucial moment can mean the difference between life and death of the whole team. This complexity allows you to retry the same map with slightly different tactics and potentially vastly different outcomes, and leads to a high replayability.
2. Action. In many other online FPS games, you die a lot, after which you have to wait for that respawn timer to count to zero. This is simply very boring. In the Left 4 Dead Survival mode, you rarely die, because survivors have a lot of HP compared to the damage output of the zombies. And even after you die, you become a ghost able to fly everywhere. You can decide to explore the map, or help the team by spotting enemies.
2.1 Variety. Many different enemies keep you on your toes. You can never stand on one position for too long, as you always have to dodge rocks, smoker tongues, spit, etc. or perform a tactical retreat. You also have to keep tabs on your ammo, and use your peripheral vision to spot danger.

The only critique to the Survival mode is that the first 12 minutes are catered to newer players, and it's not at all interesting to more experienced players. However, these 12 minutes can also serve as snack time, even dinner time depending on how fast you eat.
And having food nearby important as this game can keep you engaged for many hours.

My father smoked his whole life. I was about 10 years old when my mother said to him, "If you ever want to see your children graduate, you have to stop immediately.". Tears welled up in his eyes when he realised exactly what was at stake. He gave it up immediately. Three years later he died of lung cancer. It was really sad and destroyed me. My mother said to me- "Don't ever smoke. Please don't put your family through what your father put us through.". I agreed. At 28, I have never touched a cigarette. I must say, I feel a very slight sense of regret for never having done it because this game gave me cancer anyway............
10/10 would recommend it and play anyway :)
