I played the heck out of the HL1 mod and got pretty good at it.

Bought DoD Source and found out it took away a bunch of the weapons and made a bunch of the dark corners super bright.

It's kinda fun still, it's tainted by campers and very likely people who use aim bot, but for the most part it's pretty solid and if you can manage to find a populated server it's still very playable, despite its advanced age.

I do miss being able to play as the British from the HL1 mod, and a lot of the weapons are absent like the M1 carbine, the M3 grease gun, the FG 42, K43, Lee Enfield, and the Bren gun, and the Source version doesn't have quite as many maps from what I remember. I do like the alt-fire modes on many of the weapons, and the weapons feel nice and punchy like I remember, but compared to some more modern trappings, if you're looking for more realistic weapon behaviour and functionality like in Red Orchestra you may be left wanting.

Ultimately, it's still a fun nostalgic romp from a time where you'd be surprised at what you remember if you used to be a player, but you'll also be reminded why a lot of modern FPS innovations are taken for granted these days. End up on a server against people who haven't stopped playing since this game came out and you'll probably remember why you stopped playing in the first place.
