Despite enjoying my time with Once Upon A Galaxy, I felt I had to give it a negative review as I do not feel like it's in a great place at the moment.

Galaxy is certainly fun, but in the same way a slot machine is fun. Deckbuilding simply adds your decklist to a generic draft pool which doesn't give enough consistency to really build around specific cards or payoffs. When you do manage to luck in to whatever you actually intended to do, the game shines and shows that its created a format where interesting puzzles and interactions can exist. The problem of course being that simply doesn't happen enough.

Aside from the massive role RNG plays, the other main problem is the balancing between Captains. Some are so wildly powerful that they simply dominate whatever lobby they're in. Others are so severely kneecapped that picking them is akin to just conceding right out the gate. A third group is just so reliant on RNG to be any kind of good that it's a coin flip over whether they fall into the first or second category in any given match.

As I said though, I have enjoyed playing this game. I don't think it sucks, I just want it to be better. The new set releases today and I will be playing it, I hope eventually the problems above get addressed in some manner. Until then, I'll drop in when a new update goes live and keep my fingers crossed that things move in the right direction.

Wow, what a fun game. I sure do hope the ending ties things up in a satisfying way and I didn't just waste my money on some nihilistic ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥!
