Loved the game, but definitely had its issues.

Largest issue in my mind was definitely the limited skillset available to the player for almost the entire first half of the game. The combat is a throwback to the old arcade fighter-combo system, but locked almost all the combos behind the talent skill tree system. This turned most of the early game combat into 'auto attack simulator', and sadly persisted roughly to around 1/2 way through the game.

Around the 1/2 way point, Scarlet Nexus's combat system really shines. From flashy finishers, to time stops, to alternative dimension battle arenas, you name it the combat reels you in. Scarlet Nexus was definitely a blast to play.

Absolutely amazing concept and game. Only really issue is the hard mode setting. Hard mode kinda a slog due to HP meat shields and decreased EXP, no real 'challenge'.

23.4 hours into it, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

This game reminds me of the same feelings I felt when playing Starbound. "Unfinished", "Unloved". Something Chucklefish seemingly have stayed true to. With their apparent 'dropping' of Starbound (1 minor content update in almost 3 years, a legitimate unfinished game, which only is considered passable with a massive rework mod called 'Frackin Universe') I had hoped that perhaps Chucklefish had instead invested their resources into WarGroove...

WarGroove attempts to build off of the same legacy games like Advanced Wars, and FF Tactics left behind and appears to fall fairly short. The game feels much more shallow when compared to its predecessors, removing basic utilities and quality of life features (presumably under the notion of copyright infringement?), with the addition of much more monotonous and grueling combat.

From the flavored text to status panels, to combat balance; this game feels like an 'Early Access' / 'Early Alpha' game. Texts are written in ways only 'Yoda' would understand, status panels hide stats that even 'Indiana Jones' would deem impossible to find, and balance that would validate flat earth theory. The mistakes on in these regards are beyond reasonable to 'blame the intern', this is a sheer lack of care and investment by Chucklefish.

Being a huge fan of games like Final Fantasy Tactics, Advanced Wars, Disgaea, and XCom, this game feels like a quick buck scheme. I had huge hopes, but sadly it appears, in the end, I could only care about this game as much as the developers did; Nothing.

Would I recommend this? No, go try Disgaea, it's on steam now! <3
