Despite improvements in movement and combat, and the return of the original's iconic visual and audio aesthetic, I still don't think Catalyst justifies why it needed to be open world. The game feels better suited for those looking to record background gameplay in a YouTube drama video, than it does for those looking for engaging storytelling or world-building. The visuals, music and improvements in gameplay are why I came away fairly satisfied, but I still feel as disappointed now as I did back when it first released.

The campaign has some good set pieces, especially later in the game, but you're better off skipping through the story to get to them faster because you won't miss anything interesting. The game's world does a serviceable job as a jungle gym for you to play around in, but it gives you no reason to explore. Collectibles are mostly hidden in plain sight, and side missions are repetitive. It just feels empty.

I love Mirror's Edge, but it feels like I love what I know it can be more than that what it actually is. This series still has so much potential, but I think Catalyst failing to recapture the magic of the original has probably put it to rest. I know I'm sounding mainly negative in this review but I'd recommend Catalyst if you're a fan of the first game. I just don't know if it holds up as well when not viewed through a nostalgic lens.

Good gameplay. Great art design. Great music. Great vibes... yet only lives up up to 80% of its full potential. A linear sequel with the movement and combat of Catalyst, more diverse environments, and more puzzling obstacles would be a dream.
