Early Access Review
Edit 2/8/18:

A week after launch, I can safely say I still recommend this game. But know what you're getting into.

This is not a realistic shooter. This is a very competitive, fast paced, arcade shooter with quick movement and sharp aim. You will get shot across the map, you will die without knowing where it exactly came from, and you will be fighting in a very "esports" environment. This is gaming circa 2003-2007.

Matchmaking still takes a while, but the developers have been very transparent about the issues and how they are actively working to fix matchmaking and cut back on wait time. They announce when they are going to be server reboots and hot fixes. As for how long, it can be anywhere between under a minute to five minutes. It's early access and it's going to have bumps in the road.

The lootboxes are strictly cosmetic. Don't get hung up on them.

Keep up with the developers posts on twitter and check out the subreddit if you're truly interested in the game.

This game can go far, if you give it a chance.

Do I recommend this game right now? No.

Do I recommend this game once it's been polished? Absolutely.

It's all true. Matchmaking and the servers are a mess. But Bulkhead is taking swift action to fix it. A hot patch was installed the night it was released to combat the issues with matchmaking. Two server resets are happening the day off to provide a maintenance window. The devs have ordered more servers. To judge this game in it's current state, or any early access game a day within launch is really not fair. Remember you are paying for an unfinished game with early access hence the name EARLY ACCESS.

Don't let my time play fool you. I haven't gotten into but a handful of matches (Leaving the launcher open counts as play time.) The matches I have played were mostly lopsided and unbalanced with no backfill (I got into a 4v1 where I was the one and a 4v2 where I didn't have anyone to shoot.)

So why am I recommending this game? Because I see it's potential to be excellent. The matches I played, while without their problems, I saw a really fun game. I sadly missed out on the kickstarter but I am tickled to support this game as I have been following it for a long time. The combat is tight, and the action is fast paced.

Upon writing this game on 2/2/18 I don't have plants to touch this game until 2/5. By then I expect some of the match making to be ironed out and I'll be able to enjoy the game further. Give it some time and I think B44 has the potential to be something incredible.

Honestly, I thought the Beta was solid all weekend. I enjoyed it, thought the classes were balanced, the gameplay was pretty well paced, and the maps weren't horrible. I was considering buying it until the morning of writing this review when I went to two games in a row with multiple hackers. I saw multiple wall hacks, people with perfect aim using a smg scoring consecutive headshots. These players openly admitted they were hacking also, IN VOICE. Do you know what that tells me? Activision does not care about their PC ports. Hacking has always been rampent in Call of Duty, but usually once the game has become old. This was the BETA! Honestly I see no hope for this game in multiplayer. I hope Activision will soon realize their name alone won't carry this franchise anymore.

Day of Defeat defined a large chapter of my life. When I started college I had bought the Counter-Strike 1.6 anthology, mostly to play Counter-Strike. Eventually I got fed up with sucking at Counter-Strike and the rude/obnoxious community circa 2007 and discovered Day of Defeat. I wasn't much better at it, but the pace of the game was truely inviting (only a 10 second respawn wait? :D) The next two years I got involved with a great Day of Defeat clan and looked forward to practices and clan matches. There is still a wonderful community playing to this day and is still fun to play to this day. This game is sorely underrated.
