Not recommended for solo play. Although the AI can be configured, your AI companions (and opponents) aren't smart enough and early-mid game combat becomes an exercise in frustration. I enjoyed planetary exploration, racing and some quest lines.
The final space battle and the endgame puzzle are seriously NOT fun at all. I'd recommend this game, but after playing through this bs, it's a hard pass.

Early Access Review

Explosions, guts, glory, catchy one-liners. And gore. Heaps of gore. So much gore I have flashbacks now. Best game since Duke Nukem 3D was around.

This game is one awesome puzzle. All small pieces fit in the end. Enjoyed it a great deal.

Every hour spent on this game is well worth it.

- Exploration. Subnautica is a pure exploration game for me. You discover the world around you and try to piece together clues about what did happen. If you manage to avoid spoilers, the game offers a very rewarding experience.
- Base-building. This aspect of the game is as complex as you want it to be. The game gives you a lot of freedom. I've managed to finish the story with two small habitats. Resource gathering is also exploration-based. Once you know a way to obtain a resource, you have no trouble with acquiring it in sufficient amounts. You don't need tons of resources to finish the story.
- Combat. This is the game where you are a part of the game world, not an overpowered demi-god. Combat in Subnautica uses a predator-prey approach. Predators will hunt you but will flee if you hurt them enough. If you chase a small fish, it will run from you. You can learn to avoid dangers or to combat them with tools at your disposal. Again, the game gives you many options.

- Dictates how you must play. There is an unfortunate game mechanic where time goes on in the game while you don't play. You come back after a week of real time, and some of your assets are damaged, resources are spent and some characters may go missing. In other words, the game encroaches on your real life time and cannot be really paused.
- Artificial difficulty. The above-mentioned mechanic is actually central to the game. Without it, the gameplay is shallow and straightforward. So the game draws out itself not by challenging you in new ways, but by putting sticks into your wheels so to say. Weapons and guns break and must be repaired (again, by storing them in a special building and waiting for some real-time). Same for vehicle repairs. Your NPC friends consume resources which you must scavenge time and again. If you want to keep them happy, you must provide. You don't play this game to your liking. Instead, you maintain everything.
- Relentless zombies. They just spawn around whenever there's too few of them. There's no point in fighting them because more will come to take their place. You gain nothing except "experience" from whacking the zombies. They are there to leech some of your resources. Didn't I forget to mention the enjoyment of a good zombie-bashing fight? No, I didn't. It's not there.
- Combat system. You have your various combat moves and dodge. Believe it or not, the fighting gets repetetive fast. You get a few new moves as you level up, but that's it. Once you've learned how to whack zombies, it's the same fight every time: a dozen ever-spawning zombies and you. Want to shoot them instead? It's more enjoyable than whackin' them, but then even more zombies are attracted by the noise which kind of defeats the purpose of shooting the previous ones. After a fight, remember to spend some time on maintenance. Of course, you need to replace your ammo and fix your weapon.
- Did I mention stealth? Yes, you can hide and wait in a bush. You can crouch to avoid detection. You can make a stealth kill by attacking from behind. One problem: you're never killing all of them this way. Imagine playing a stealth game with respawning enemies and you can get a sense of how entertaining this is.
