I've seen him as a character so devoid of emotion that he lives his life rigorously through the rules he has created, due to his own apathy to the value of human life. Chigurh was so entertaining throughout the film precisely because he's a total psychopath interacting with normal people, which adds tension due to the fact that nobody is truly safe. I haven't looked any deeper into his character, but it's nice to see some people have. I just like to imagine him as a man abiding by strict rules in his life to avoid his inner demons, or rather, his total apathy.
