I'm going to recommend this to anyone who wants to get better at FPS games.

It has all of the scenarios you'd encounter in any FPS game. I specifically bought it for mid-air rocket practice (I'm a Quake 3/Live player) and the Midair Mix workshop item you can subscribe to is exactly the practice I was looking for.

10/10 - I cannot think of anything that could possibly be improved on, and if there were, the community would fix it as soon as improvement potential was noticed.

In all honesty, it took me quite a long time to get into Quake Live.

Like many kids born in the 80s to parents who were essentially computer-illiterate, I had absolutely no idea how amazing PC gaming was. PC gaming was basically always the superior platform over console, but I didn't know that. As such I played on original Nintendo, Super Nintendo at other people's houses, then I got an N64. Playstation, Playstation 2 as well as playing a bit on my brother's original XBOX.

I don't know why, but I became a huge computer nerd after I graduated college. I would've been about 23, sometime in 2006-2007. I first got into building computers because of my musical background, as one of my degrees is in music.

Eventually I got into playing computer video games, and once I played and finished Half Life 2, I went full-on PC Master Race. Then around like 2016 I started learning about arena shooters, and that of course lead me to Quake Live. I seriously think I ended up spending about 200-300 hours watching other people play Quake, videos on how to strafe jump, item timings, what weapons are good for what situation and so forth.

After about two years off-and-on puckin' around, I started playing Quake Live consistently this year. I try to play Quake Champions when I have the patience for it, but I love the graphical style of Quake Live for whatever reason, and I can start up Quake Live from Steam and be playing against other players in a full server in well under 30 seconds.

That will simply never happen in Quake Champions with today's computers. Maybe 10 years from now, if Bethesda actually allows private servers to keep Quake Champions alive (yeah, and maybe I know how to draw a square circle.) Champs will boot up super fast and whatnot. That's basically a pipe dream now.

To summarize; I got into PC gaming quite late in life compared to other people. It took me about 2 years off-and-on to learn Quake Live well enough to go positive K/D, and although I still constantly have good games and bad games, I'm noticeably improving week after week, MOST of the community is very nice and welcoming. Not all, but most. And people are more than happy to give you pointers and recommendations so long as you're not spamming hate speech and just generally being a brat.

The speed and depth of this game have at present made it my favorite first-person shooter. I haven't even talked about rocket jumps and Clan Arena! Check out on YouTube "Rocket Jump Ninja" and his Advanced Rocket Jumping video.

I think everyone who likes multiplayer first-person shooters should be playing Quake Live, and ideally, only be playing Quake Live, because there's never enough people in the servers! :-P

I play almost exclusively first-person shooters.
I care far more about performance and speed than I do about graphics or character progression. This game ticks all the boxes for me. One of the best single-player games I've ever played.

I haven't checked out the multiplayer just yet, but if I am ever fortunate enough to come across some other souls Online, I'll absolutely jump at the chance.

Early Access Review
It crashes after a black window opens up on Arch Linux. I can't recommend this game because of the crashing,
but also because MOST OF the game is waiting around in lobbies for a game to start.

I can play 3 full games in Quake Live in the time it takes to play 1 game in Quake Champions.

If I could at least play the damn thing on Linux, I might recommend it. As it stands now... nope.

Great performance on Linux. I haven't touched multiplayer yet, but the single-player campaign thus far has been a great challenge. Playing on Ultra-Violence, although if you want to run-and-gun/not need to worry much about tactics, Hurt Me Plenty is probably a better mode.
