SPOILER WARNING

this is mainly a personal rant because i feel like i need to write my thoughts about this down somewhere.

i hate what this series turned into. i loved LiS1 and LiS2 is one of my favorite games of all time. i even liked double exposure to a certain degree (mainly asthetics). but i just have so many problems with this game. first of all a big technical issue: in so many cases i would miss dialogue because i walked 1 meter to the right and triggered something different or accidentally opened a menu.

now 2 things that they removed that are actually insane 2 me are the chapters for one (which i can live with) but removing social media????? why??? one of my favorite parts of the previous game was looking through the social media feed and seeing what all the side characters were up to. it made the game feel alive.

very frequently i wondered how much game design thought actually went into this game. the "puzzles" are rarely actual puzzles or gameplay elements at all, but instead just walk over there talk to that guy and then walk over there and talk to that other guy over and over again. and when there actually was things to figure out its not really fun. a big issue i had was toward the end of the game when you had loretta trapped in another room in the fire. going through that sequence max at some point says something along the lines of "i should look for other students", i interepret that as i check the rooms around the area for someone that may be able to help so i go to the closest door and "leave". i may have been stupid but i didnt expect to instantly FULLY LEAVE the area and not being able to go back. i thought this meant leave to another room to look for students but no.
the dialogue isnt much better, its incredibley cringey which was fine for LiS1 and LiS2 the characters were teens and even then it was a lot less (at least from what i remember). these characters are supposed to be full grown adults at a university and the dialogue just feels incredibley unnatural.
the ending in general was incredibley unsatisfying. i originally picked the arcadia bay ending in LiS1. the whole game i got the impression that the point of the story is that we shouldnt be stuck in the past and try to move on from bad experiences & coming to terms with it considering the fire still happens unless you guess the suspects (i'll get to that in a second). so i was incredibley disappointed seeing the ending that chloe just lives???? now this would make sense if you chose to sacrifice arcadia bay (i dont know how that side of the game plays out so forgive me) but her just coming back to life with no consequences feels absolutely insane to me but thats a completely subjective opinion, it just felt like i needed to say that.
regarding the suspects i ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up and didnt choose ren because i failed the talking sequence with chloe at the final prompt (which also felt like i just had to guess what to pick but i probably missed something) so i wrote him off as a suspect but what i truly dont understand is how youre supposed to guess vinh as the other suspect. i barely had opportunities to interact with him at ALL. i dont know if its because i didnt have max romance him in double exposure or what but that just felt wild to me.

credits where its due there are some parts of the game i really enjoyed like the abraxas party and moses' whiteboards

dont get me wrong a lot of these are personal gripes i have with the game. someone else could have a completely different experience with the game.

im sure other people love this game for what it is, but unfortunately its just not the life is strange i got to know anymore and not what i love anymore. this game definitely wants to push the max and chloe romance which i dont hate but was never really a pull factor for me.

i miss what this franchise used to be.
i miss actual intricate plotlines with a hard hitting story like in LiS1
i miss good character development like in LiS2 where you could see characters shape into a better human being and not be stuck as the person they were 10 years prior.
i miss a world that feels ALIVE and wasnt just you visiting the same 4 locations with the same characters in the same positions saying the same things (looking at you lucas) over and over again.
i miss game design that went beyond you just walking from one point to another with a new bit of information or item.
i miss life is strange.

No Survival Game grabbed my active attention and playtime like this one did for years (last time was with frostpunk 1, which was ironically by the same devs)

The first story is pretty fun and felt very rewarding and intriguing. roottreemania however... jesus that was ASS. dont get me wrong the story was interesting and all, but it SUCKED as a game. some clues you just kinda have to pull out of your ass and the constant searching through the magazines and following multiple chains to get miniscule clues felt a lot more than a chore than a game. i definitely recommend the first/original story. but dont play roottreemania, watch it somewhere or something, since the story is actually really interesting, but the gameplay is just not good at all

simple on surface, but surprisingly complex-ish which makes it hella fun
