How do I use a Steam gift given to me by a friend?

If you do not already have Steam, follow the link in the email you received to download and install Steam. Once you have Steam installed, you will be prompted to create an account or login to an existing Steam account. If you do not have an account, please create one. A pop-up message will notify you that you have received a gift. You must click the "activate" link in Steam in order to redeem your gift. Once you have accepted the gift, you can download the game from the "Library" list.

If you do not see the gift or email, log in to your Steam account and navigate to the "Games" menu and select "Manage gifts and guest passes...". From that menu the game should be listed as "Status: Not yet accepted". Double clicking or clicking "Show" on the game in this menu will bring up a window allowing you to accept the gift. Clicking the "Open My Gift" button will redeem the gift.

If you do not see your gift in the "Manage gifts and guest pass

Go to the My Games tab and there should be the game name and next to it it should say "ready to recieve/ready to download/ready to install", or something along the lines of that.
