tl;dr - DON'T GIVE UP
Blender is amazing, the number of things this piece of software can do is mindblowing. Some guy at Pixar said that it can do most of the things that their software does. It's free, it's open-source and the community is huge. Sounds too good to be true? Well, let's address the elephant in the room.
The main problem with blender is its steep learning curve. Using blender as a beginner feels like riding a broken mechanical bull. You will feel like the anime character left alone in some haunted woods to practice some arcane magic. You will feel miserable, you will want to give up. You will see everyone showing off with photorealistic renders, these human models that look realer than you, and then look at yourself struggling with your donut tutorial series...
Until,
It will all click in your head, things will start to make sense, or at least you will build some muscle memory or PTSD from all the torture you brought upon yourself. That eureka moment comes when you find THE tutorial. For me, it was the "Complete Blender Creator: Learn 3D Modelling for Beginners" on Udemy. There are plenty of tutorials and courses on youtube and wherever.
Let's cut to the chase
Since the 2.8 update, blender feels way more beginner-friendly. The interface is nicer and more intuitive. I am still following the course i mentioned above, and i started to feel that i'm piecing things together in my head, rather than feeling like a newborn baby, assaulted with new information and crying myself to sleep just to wake up in the same nightmare.
They are still updating it, bringing new optimizations and features, and i can't wait to understand the words in their patch notes. I really encourage you to continue on this journey even if it feels hard at first.
Steam or no Steam?
It's nice to have blender on steam. I like it because it keeps track on the time i spent on it. It makes me proud of myself and makes me want to learn more, if that makes sense. But you may want to disable automatic updates and update it if you want, so you don't lose things because of compatibility issues. This was a problem when they jumped to 2.8, so keep that in mind. You can also download the program from their site[blender.org], where you can find experimental builds, long-term-support (LTS) versions and whatever.
Conclusion
Don't give up. Give it a shot. It is a valuable skill, it is hard at first but it quickly becomes rewarding. Maybe blender is not for you, but it is free and incredibly powerful so it deserves a chance. Keep in mind that everyone started in the same place as you do, and you can be one of those people pushing blender to its limit to achieve realism or express what you want to express through your art. Good luck and have fun!
