This feels like a spiritual sequel to Townscaper in the best possible way. Just relax and build your little medieval dioramas.

This is a game unlike any other I have ever played, and I have played a lot. In the guise of an old-school RPG, this game is something entirely different, and very profound.

I will not say that this is the next step in the evolution of games, because it is not, though I hope more games like this will come out. I have my doubts however, that they will be as impressive. It feels more like a glimpse into a world, where games evolved differently. This is what we would have gotten if CRPGs had evolved from more freeform, less combat-focused RPG systems, rather than "just" DnD. It is magnificent.

I cannot pick one part of the game that stands out above the others. I thought I was going to name the writing as the main attraction, but the more I think about it, the less I feel it to be true. Yes, the writing is phenomenal, however, what truly makes it shine is the perfect match between the writing and the equally stellar music and art. It greater than the sum of its parts, which are already pretty great by themselves.

Early Access Review
A nice little game about captaining an airship to obtain riches. It is a fairly simplistic management game with a lovely atmosphere, but don't go in expecting havy-duty management or tons of brilliant writing. At least not yet, this is pretty early access.

In some ways, it reminds me a bit of Sunless Sea, due to the travel between ports on a randomised map, but in truth, they are not much alike. Merchant of the Skies has far less danger and far less writing and travel takes much less time. Instead the game is more about the simplistic management of your business empire.

The core loop of the early game is to buy low and sell high while doing quests (such as delivering letters) to earn some additional cash. Later on, islands will be bought and factories built to make more advanced resources to sell, and obtain the raw materials yourself rather than buying them. The game only has automated production, however, not transport, so in the later game, much of your time will be devoted to ferrying resources between your factories.

Most islands are either just towns or resource sites, the more unique sites, such as the singing carrot, are much rarer and ultimately play a much smaller role. I am hoping this will change with updates.

I won a victory in one sitting, taking ~2.5 hours, because I was not sure if there is a save system yet. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the game, but I'm not sure I will go back to it until it has received some content updates, since I feel that I have experienced pretty much all it has to offer at this point.

I also experienced some minor audio issues, but I'm not sure if that is the fault of the game, or because my pc was doing stuff in the background.

A delightful RPG that allows you to complete meaningful tasks in a nonviolent manner and meet interesting characters.

A good game. Rather short, but I found the length fitting. It never feels tedious or drawn out. The voice acting, environments and character design are all great, though the lip-sync is the weakest point graphically.

In the end, it is pretty cheap, so I recommend the experience for this price. I suggest buying the Collector's Edition for the soundtrack.

Fantastic adventure game. It takes everything great from the Blackwell series and adds the extra touch of choice and consequences. Great writing and a great game.
