Upon launch, a lot of things weren't quite right or finished in the game. A-life didn't work at all (which for me, wasn't of primary interest). Things were unbalanced and buggy, there were a lot of performance issues, etc. But the team kept to their promises and proceded with fixing and finalizing all these things. For me personally, with a few of the early balancing mods, I found it quite playable. And what was most important: it was S.T.A.L.K.E.R.! The look and feel of the old games, the eerie locations, the ambience and sound design - the game had kept true to its own legacy. (And one could even count that for the bugginess. ^^)
If you loved the old games and are not a pretentious "a game must be perfection or it is absolute crap" black and white world-view person (a.k.a. Sith), Heart of Chornobyl is a must. For me personally, I must say that Stalker is and always has been an experience, not just a game.

It's like Minecraft. In 2D. With nice pixelated graphics. And a joyful soundtrack. And most of all: some goals to reach instead of focusing on the sandbox functionality.

I don't play many new games or games with fancy graphics and I'm usually more the kind of indie player, but >observer_ really is something. Something... hard to describe. Something which brings gaming at least one (big) step into the direction movies are currently going as well: the revival of good old, but modernized cyberpunk. (Anyone say New Retro Wave?) If you like Blade Runner, thematically, and/or the Amnesia titles with their hide & seek mechanics and/or games with episodic phases like the "dream" worlds of FarCry 3 or Max Payne 2, then this game is probably something for you. Effectively, it's not very long to play, but it has a few interesting side quest along with the main story.

Although it comes along as kind of an explorative walking simulator, it not only contains a lot of good and mood-suited girl punk songs and atmospheric background sound but also a really emotional and touching story which is told in just the right pace, driving you on to find out more about why your family's gone when you come home for a break from college.
