The granddaddy of games like Bioshock and Prey, this game absolutely stands the test of time. It's a great nonlinear game that does not hold your hand, but you always feel like you know what to do. Lots of non-standard gameplay mechanics (for example, you can't really die) makes this game feel different from other games in the genre. I've never played the original, but loved this game nonetheless.

Dwarf Fortress is one of those games that everyone should have played. most people haven't as the graphics were difficult to read, and the UI messy. With the steam release, both of those have been (mostly) resolved, so you shouldn't have an excuse now! Get to it!

And remember, losing is fun!
