Atrocious performance with only a single goal of improvement in a distant future, which won't fix the whole game. It's a disgrace to the Monster Hunter franchise.

I got it given away by Fanatical so I played it through and through, but it was a mediocre experience disturbed by the performance issues.

Reviewed at (pre-?)alpha version.

I won't go into tidbits since this is far from the release version, but will rather focus on the concept.

This is a co-op only game, meaning you need a friend to play with, which is a welcoming feature only if you have friends to play with. I don't see how would this game be played as a single-player because there are some events where both players need to act at the same time, otherwise they get caught and have to restart from the checkpoint. I like the idea of playing it with someone.

There is not much explanation on why do the heroes get into the situation they are in, other than the presence of some evil force that enchanted the world, and heroes fearing for the future of the Weeny Wise. In this demo we got tossed right into the action, and later got some dialogue exchanges between the heroes that revealed their reluctance in cooperation, but saw it as a necessity. I can see the potential of the story here, given that these struggles may continue, but may be overcome for the common goal, where friendship develops. We also saw one of Hugo's enchanted friends react to a friend, despite being controlled by the evil force, which further suggests the power of friendship being the central force as a protagonist.

There were little mushroom helpers at the beginning, and, while cute, they were missing in that role in the later portions of the game. Again, this is probably due to the alpha version.

I overall enjoyed the demo, but it is very short and obviously lacks content. We can see a lot more in the trailer and screenshots, so there are lots of functionalities we haven't been able to experience. I would love to see an expanded demo.

---

The things we noticed in this version:
+ The world succeeds in presenting an enchanted world.
+ Voice acting is great.
+ Has its charm.
- Players have to fight against the camera when it moves—this annoyed us because we were supposed to know where will the camera go.
- Lack of proper indicators for the interactive objects. You can see "Boost" letters after you hit the blockade, but they are not that obvious at first. Objects that needed a push sometimes had a hint (scratches on the floor), and sometimes not.
- Characters feel like they are floating (during movement and jumps), and they enter motion-locked animations when you tap a button to interact with something. This lock would frustrate us, and sometimes lead us to death.

Other notes:
* Going back replays the dialogues.
* Going back sets the checkpoint to a previous point.
* That Hugo's friend behavior has a scary element, much like some horror game. Not sure if that was the intention. It does not make sounds, and has limited movement animation.
* Some areas let us fall through the floor (behind the right doors you come through before unlocking the final boss area).
* Puzzles we saw were very simple, and usually required no teamwork to solve. Yes, boosting and tapping two buttons at the same time are two-person actions, but other than that, one person could do the work while the other waited idle. We could use more cooperation in this co-op title. That vine trap "puzzle" failed on us, because we stepped on the correct pad and then got teleported to the next checkpoint on our fail.
* Music can get muted for some reason.

I believe most of the issues are due to early development version.

Early Access Review
It's not the best FPS out there, but it's good enough to make me come back every now and then.

It is still in early release state, so there are not that many cheaters. This makes the PvP playable unlike many competitive shooters out there (khm, khm, CS:GO).

The co-op parts are a bit bland (enemies lack variety), but Expedition is all-right since you get random modifications each run. Not sure why, but sometimes other players just run into mobs (those are maybe bots, or players using bots to farm EXP).

Weekly events are fun, it's just that I'd prefer them always available so I can choose which mode I wish to play.

This game keeps being better and better with each update and the updates are frequent. It's my Labor of Love nominee. One of the best gaming experiences for me.
