Early Access Review
AdventureQuest 3D. Artix Entertainment's upcoming game that will hopefully save the company from bankruptcy. Unfortunately, that hope is soul-crushingly misplaced. The fact of the matter is that AdventureQuest 3D is a terrible game. It suffers from the same problem that plagues all of Artix Entertainment's games. It's boring and repetitive. Plus, the choice to make a multi-platform game ultimately cripples the final product. The game is an unfocused mess filled to the brim with forced grinding and repetition.

I downloaded this game in March of 2016. That was a year and a half ago from the current time I'm writing this and is also the reason why I have a grotesque amount of playtime on this game. The game itself hasn't improved in the slightest during that period of time. Regardless, the idea that my personal playtime would somehow take away from the points made in this review is absolutely absurd.

Let's start with the graphics. This game was made with the mindset of creating a multiplatform game. A game for computers and smartphones. Due to this, the game had to downscale its graphics intensely. This game looks like it would belong on the DS. Because of this decision to make the game accessible to mobile gamers as well as PC gamers, you're basically playing a mobile game that was ported to your computer. The render distance is atrocious and no settings exist to modify it, which leads to spectacular moments where chunks of terrain disappear and the people standing on top of said terrain just float there. The amount of content expected for a mobile game is FAR less than that expected of a PC game. Mobile gaming is a fad that lasted for little more than a year. If the game continues down its current path, then it won't be rated anything better than mediocre.

"Combat" consists of rapidly pressing the skills that aren't on cooldown until you win or lose. When there are only 4 buttons to press, each battle becomes an exact copy of the first one. Enemies are just hitboxes with different health and stats. There isn't a fundamental difference between enemies. You would fight a massive dragon the same way you would fight a dumb goblin. The bosses have the occasional skill here or there, but these are usually limited to doing more damage. To win a fight, you just need higher numbers or more people. Not once does the game require you to do anything remotely resembling brainwork. Press the buttons until you win. Repeat until inevitable boredom. The multitude of classes doesn't help. All it changes is some visuals and the order you press the buttons in. The decision to also adapt the game to mobile hinders creative progress, as 4 skills per class isn't nearly enough to have a fun and balanced class system. No matter how many classes they implement, it won't fix the combat itself. Adding more classes just adds more ways to do the same mundane task.

The Controls are pointless and don't add anything to the game. Why is there a jump button? Oh, for platforming. Why is there platforming in an MMO? Jumping adds nothing to the game aside from bugs and terrible map design. When you do a dungeon, there are often points where you have to jump. This would be fine if it was implemented well. But instead, you can stand on any slanted surface. On one map, you can climb the invisible boundary wall until you go out of bounds and fall into the void. There are no situations where having a jump button adds to the game in any way. There are travel forms to move around faster. Except the vast majority of them are only accessible to players who pay real money, which makes the game pay-to-win. In this case, it's more of a pay-to-get-this-crap-over-with-faster.

The quests are absolutely terrible. Every quest is either "Kill X monster X amount of times", or "Click X object on the map". The quests never deviate from each other, and only add to the boredom. The game mistakes "difficulty" for "taking a long time to finish", rather than "requiring skill at the game". Quests for equipment isn't much better. Most of it boils down to "Kill X monster for X reagent and then wait a few hours". None of this is difficult. It just takes time. Getting items is an inevitability. Just keep pressing buttons until you get the items. Rinse and Repeat. The story itself isn't much either. You load into the game and you're thrown into a battlefield. What's going on in this battlefield? Some skeletons and knights are beating each other to death. Why does this concern your character? Why would the player be invested in a random battle? The dialogue is bland and sounds like it was made up in about 15 minutes. The cardboard cutouts the game tries to pass off as characters are forgotten immediately after they're introduced; by the player and the game. The game is a massive grindfest with no variation except for the colors and the names of the monsters.

Overall, there isn't much else to say about AdventureQuest 3D except: "It's boring". It's a faulty product. The game certainly has potential, but it needs a massive rework before I'd recommend it to anyone. Make the quests less repetitive, make the map design make sense, but most importantly make the game fun. Currently, there's no reason for anyone to come back and revisit the game. It's bland, repetitive, and lacks any engaging substance that would make players come back to it. I'll give this game a generous score of 3/10.
