Less emphasis on horror compared to the first game, but packed full of charming characters, intertwined mysteries and extremely dripped out birds. There's a sense of passion here that's become rare to come across in major publisher release, great value at this price point too.

This game has a bit of "running out of money towards the end of development" issue but overall I had a pretty great time. There are definitely a lot of minor issues to fix to round up some of the rough edges, particularly for consistency/intuitiveness in higher end combat, but what's there is alright for most of the journey.

It's like Hades but they added a 2 next to it and also a ton of content, improvements and pretty people
Balance-wise I assume some things will continue to be tweaked as they gather player data (please let me dash-cancel out of the third dagger basic attack animation) but this is an immaculate initial release

I was really hoping to have a great time with this game, but unfortunately I found myself writing a negative review.

I was a huge fan of DD and very excited to play a sequel that seemed to be an improved remake of it. What I got however was baffling performance issues even on a high-end rig equipped with a 4080, alongside tons of softlocks and crashes that made me lose progress. To top it off, the story is somehow more disjointed than its predecessor, the enemy and class variety has been reduced (though some classes got upgraded), and the magic of exploration wears off pretty quickly. The pawns seem to be way smarter and have neat interactions with the players, but this is so far the only clear improvement over a 12 year old game. Most other changes come with a list of pros and cons.

I initially decided to trust in Capcom and wait for the supposed performance patch instead of refunding, but I have now come to deeply regret this. Steam is refusing to issue refunds for what is still a broken release. There is a very enjoyable RPG somewhere in here, but all I really got out of this purchase was less money and broken trust, especially when so many fantastic games have come out since the start of the year where my money would be better spent.

I urge caution to anyone who decides to pick DD2 up- you might get lucky with the performance issues and bugs, but you better decide whether you're lucky within the 2 hour refund period. I hope the day comes where I can turn this review into a positive one.
