Everything about it -- the haunting artwork, the endlessly dark and claustrophobic world, the storytelling through pulp-noir monologues by Ron Perlman -- is a beautifully crafted love letter to the work of master artist and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola. Hell, they did such an impeccable job at replicating his iconic style that I half-expect to find out that Mike himself was involved in the game's development.

Gameplay is fairly simple, not too hard, not too easy, at least in the earlier levels of the beta. As a twin-stick shooter, it's a lot of fun. My only critiques are that progression seems just a touch unbalanced so far (which is exactly what an open beta is supposed to reveal, so no worries for the full release here) and that after the first level or two, the game introduces an element of verticality in the form of multi-leveled rooms, but doesn't actually anything interesting with it. It's just a ladder that safely separates you from some of the enemies in a room, and it really just seems to take away complexity and difficulty with progression instead of adding it. That just strikes me as another beta feature that isn't fully formed though, so it might not be an issue later either.

Overall, I love the game, and I can see myself spending a lot of time here when the rest of the content is ready.
