I was huddling down in a snowy Russian forest clutching my rifle, taking potshots at the other side of the river that was swarming with soviets. I thought we had a fair chance at holding the line, until an explosion tore my squad commander apart as he hunkered down just a few feet away. Through my panic I could hear our commander yell \"somebody get rid of that tank!\" As I clutched my anti tank grenade close, I knew what I had to do. I sprinted out, praying to the furher that the Bolscheviks\' bullets would miss as I weaved through the trees towards the lumbering hunk of communist metal that was decimating our team. I chucked the grenade and dived to the earth, where I was greeted by the sound of an explosion and the cheering of my battalion, insisting Hitler would personally grant me the iron cross. Unfortunatley that never happend, as I was shot in the head shortly after while running back to my team in my excitment.
So yeah I guess you could say this game is worth buying.

I originally purchased this game as part of a humble bundle, and let it sit in my library for awhile before downloading it, not sure at all what to expect. I can definitley say I was pleasantly surprised, as this game is filled with intense shootouts, gritty brawls, car chases, and some foul but witty dialogue. You are essentially an Italian-American returning from fighting World War II in Italy, and long story short, become involved with the various gangs and mafias in Empire City. The story was actually fairly interesting, and it really felt like you were progressing deeper into the power and danger provided by the mafias as you did jobs and favors for the various members of each. A couple interesting twists were provided that kept things from getting too old as well. The chemistry between your character, Vido, and his best friend Joe is also something that pulls this game together, and is often very funny and witty to hear them banter during car rides or shoot-outs. It should be mentioned that this game is very dark and gritty, and a bit stereotypical with some of the characters, which made the underground crime feeling this game gives off even more potent. There also is a form of open world where you can walk or drive around the city of Empire Bay between missions, but, while beautiful, feels almost lacking due to the lack of side-missions or things to do other than drive around and buy clothes or food. The shooting is really something to behold, with broken glass and wood flying around as tommy guns blast between you and your foes. The driving in this game is not the best, but it is certainly fun to do, and the 40s-late 50s look the cars have is something you don't really see, which make it even better. The changing of the seasons during the story also adds for the cool feature of having to deal with icy roads at points. Overall, I'd say this game is definitly worth the asking price, and I'm surprised I hadn't heard of it earlier, as it feels polished, and its graphics have aged very well. The story is dark and interesting, the dialogue is swear-filled and perfectly matches the gangster feel, and the shooting and driving is very fun, which more than make up for the unfortunatly lacking open world. If you're a fan of the Godfather series, the Untouchables, or just really wanted to be an Italian mobster blasting away at other gang-affiliated immigrant groups as you rise in power and wealth through the beautifully gritty world of crime, you should certainly give this game a go.
