Not sure why this has mixed ratings - the DLC was amazing. Not a huge fan of third person though, thankfully I got used to it fairly quickly. Well worth the money if you are purchasing it on sale.

Early Access Review
Fun light rouge-like. Worth double its cost. Only complaint is that magic weapons feel like the only viable weapon type in endgame.

Large portion of end game is unbalanced. Have to spend tons of premium currency in order to make any significant progress. Feels like I hit a brick wall in terms of progression.

I still think about this game a year after completing it.

If you give this game a chance, it will easily become an experience you never forget.

All I will say is:
  • Be patient early game. Once you start getting a grasp on what to do, it really picks up.

  • Do not google clues. I admittedly searched the answers for some of the puzzles I was stuck on. I deeply regret not giving extra effort. Everything you need to complete the game is available to you through exploration. Refer to your ship log if you are ever stuck (a tool used to track your progression).

  • Do the DLC after completing base-game. They really nailed the implementation and improved drastically on gameplay / storytelling.

This will forever be in my top 5 games. The DLC was more than I could have ever asked for. Hope to see more out of these developers in the future.

Hidden gem.

Surprised this game doesn't get more attention considering how good it was.

I completed my first playthrough on hard difficulty within ~18 hours playtime (Completed all 40 achievements within the run).

PROS:
  • Refreshing gameplay: It's nice to play a game with minimalistic graphics and easy to understand mechanics.
  • Simplistic character builds: It takes no more than 30 seconds to switch between melee, ranged, and magic builds.
  • Challenging: Personally, I like to get as much out of games as I can. Playing on hard difficulty required me to overcome a lot of challenges that felt very rewarding on completion.

CONS:
  • Crafting interface could be improved. Felt disorganized, wish I could sort by type or rareity.
  • Melee felt impossible. Projectiles are very harsh in this game (at least in hard difficulty) and it felt impossible to use melee weapons mid to end game.
  • Wish I could've sold my spare items. Felt completely redundant to mine or pickup crafting items since you don't get to utilise 90% of them.
  • NPC dialogue is waaay too zoomed in. I'm arms length from my monitor, and had to physically backup from my desk to read the zoomed in pixel font.

(The pros outweigh the cons by all means)

Overall a really good game to pickup. Looking forward to re-visiting the game in the future.

Amazing

- Easy learning curve
- Fun to play with friends
- Progressing your skill-tree does not feel grindy
- Introduces new characters and weapons at a steady pace
- Offers good replay-ability once you finish normal difficulty

My only complaint would be that the difficulty might be scaled up too much when playing co-op.

Playing solo normal difficulty feels extremely easy compared to playing the same difficulty with friends.

Also note that as of the time of this review, co-op is peer-to-peer hosted. Meaning the host should ideally have good internet for smooth gameplay with friends.

One of the best games I've ever played.

I have played this game with about 5 other people. What's truly amazing about this game is that only one person needs to buy it. Your friends can either play locally or online through the friends pass.

There is a very diverse range of game mechanics throughout the game. Each chapter introduces new obstacles and tools for you to problem solve with making each chapter unique. The puzzles required to solve are challenging enough to where you can still enjoy the game and not get frustrated on your first playthrough. My first playthrough took about nine hours. However I have easily spent another 10 hours of playtime just playing the minigames with the same friend.

The re-playability is amazing. I have discovered something new each time I've played. Whether its a new mini-game, easter-egg or small detail. They are always a wonder to come across.

The game is optimized and runs smoothly despite having to render two different perspectives most of the game. There are very few instances where I experienced frame drops.

Overall, I was very impressed. It's one of those games where you wish you could go back in time to re-experience for the first time. I could not recommend this game enough. As I approach 50 hours of playtime, I want to thank Hazelight studios for developing such an amazing game <3

Great, cost-effective game.

After revisiting this game 4 years later, I'm changing my review to positive.

Turmoil delivers simple yet strategic gameplay that’s easy to pick up and enjoy. It’s ideal for playing alongside something else on a second monitor and/or in short sessions when you have some time to kill.

The base game offers around 15–30 hours of content across regular and expert mode, making it well worth picking up, especially on sale.
