We indulge them. A sausage, a steak, a ball that squeaks, a new coat. Somehow we like to lavish even our most meager excess onto them. In exchange only for the gift of giving it. That's the deal, the contract. We will give, they will receive. And in their receiving we will see ourselves remade; generous, kind, worthy.
