The game came out 3 days ago and I already have over a day of playtime.

I've got issues, it's not flawless. The second boss is awful, but like. Look at the date of this review and the amount of time I'd played at time of review. I clearly love this game,

...I can't believe I'm actually hyped for a Bubsy game now.

"Open world floating islands with titanfall-style parkour shooting in arenas, but also a hoverboard and a grappling hook and slow-mo and a roguelike mode and RPG progression with perks that can do anything from 'refill ammo on kill' to 'propel you backwards when you shoot'" sounds like the kind of project that *wouldn't* work because it's just the designer picking out everything that sounds cool without regard for how it'll work together.

The fact that it all *does* work, and so well, is a testament to the skill of the developer.

I did like the game up until the reveal that "bonus objective" and "mission complete" were lies, and I had to go back and redo missions I'd previously completed but now with one arm tied behind my back.

If it had let the mission complete screen mean the mission was actually complete, it might've ended up in my favorite games of all time, and I might've even gone back and done some of the bonus objectives as a self-imposed challenge. But being told I had to really soured the experience for me.

I first launched this game around 8 PM on Friday April 11th. As of 11 PM on Monday April 14th I have over 16 hours in it. It is now my lunch break on the 15th and I'm going to play more of it. And I don't even normally like roguelikes.

All of which is to say: Yes I recommend this game.

Ultimately, it's a game that doesn't pretend to be more than a game, and in 2024 that's mostly the purview of indie games. It's nice to see a proper AAA (or AA) scale game like this. People say it feels like a 360 game and I very much agree.

But ultimately what I'm here for is the Architecture. The environment design is stellar, if you can find time between purging xenos and heritics, you'll want to just look out on the environment and see a titanic tower, or a city that extends for miles in every direction, including up and down, or maybe a cannon with a bore wider than your house.

I've 100%ed this game.

I've only 100%ed 5 games on steam.

I was able to do this in under 5 hours.

Take from that what you will. You can say it's bad that I was able to 100% it in just 4.5 hours, or you can say it's good since I liked the game enough to bother doing it.

Personally I'm inclined towards the latter, so this is a positive review

Absolutely sublime. Best game I've played this year, and Tinykin is the only thing that comes close.

There's not really any game to this game, but if you go into it with the mindset of a relaxation toy instead of a game, it excels at that.

There's a thing you hear people say about VR games. They always say "it feels like you're in the game." And they're right, for most VR games.

Alyx, however, goes beyond that. The game feels so real that it no longer feels like you've been transported to anotehr world. It instead feels like you're still in the real world, but the real world now has combine and zombies and such. And even beyond that, it's an exceptional game. Even if it didn't feel so real, it would still get glowing reviews.

If you have a VR setup, you should get this game. If you don't have a VR setup, but you have the means to acquire and use one, you should get one, then get this game. If you don't have the means to acquire or use a VR setup, then I hope for your sake that VR becomes more accessible so that you can experience this.

I had been planning on 100%ing this game. There's maybe five games I've liked enough to decide to 100% them, and this one is easily the biggest. I was only four timepieces away. I'd even gotten through the ridiculously difficult time rift in The Arctic Cruise. It took me about two hours of attempts, but at least it was fun.

I can't say the same for act two of the Arctic Cruise. It's intensely difficult, and still would be even if the game didn't take control away from you when you're carrying too many items, which you have to do to get everything done in time. But if it was just difficult, I would've pushed through it, like I did with the time rift. The problem is that it's very difficult and not fun at all. Not being able to control where your character is going, when you have almost no spare time on an already tight timer is not fun, it's frustruating. There are games I hate that I would rather play than act two of the arctic cruise.

Don't get this DLC. Absolutely get A Hat in Time, and get Nyakuza Metro, but don't get this one. That way you can 100% the game without having to play one of the worst levels out there.
